Neophyte Question/Problem with new Widescreen - DVDfile.com forum for DVD, Blu-Ray, and HD-DVD

I am new HDTV Widescreen and DVD owner but confused. (Toshiba 57in HDTV and Toshiba Progressive Scan 3750). I rented Braveheart and set my DVD player to 16X9 Widescreen but I still get blacklines (letterbox effect) Picture was great but I thought I was not supposed to get letterbox on any DVD. Have not yet tried other movies. What am I doing wrong?
