white speckles

When you watch some movies, you might notice some white speckles from time to time. Is this normal?

Actually, the white spots are nicks in the emulsion of the print, where the actual image has been chipped off of the backing. Dust specks are the black spots you sometimes see on lighter areas of the film. Lots of times, old movies are rampant with such artifacts, as there is no way to mechanically clean the print of them. Newer transfers of some older movies use digital imaging tools to eliminate the artifacts and clean up the image.
