end of chapter freeze - DVDfile.com forum for DVD, Blu-Ray, and HD-DVD

I just purchased my first dvd-rom drive and I'm having a problem with every disk.
The DVD plays just fine until the end of the chapter. Then the picture freezes with the sound soon to follow. I can only play one chapter at a time. And I have to select it manually.
Do I need a hardware decoder as well as a software decoder?
I purchased a Pioneer DVD-116, I'm running Win 98. I'm using Direct DVD 2.5 from Orion Studio's.
And I've got plenty of ram. The video card is a I/O Magic 3d hp. 16meg memory. Hope someone can help. So far Orion Studio's has not figured it out. I did a search for softdvd.ini and found nothing. I'm confused!

Welcome to the forum wingman!

Where did you get your DVD software from? Do you have multiple programs installed? What chipset is your videocard?

I downloaded the software from Orion Studio's,
I did have a different program but deleted it.
I think it was Windvd.
The video card is a AGP card.

When you say deleted, did you uninstall it from the Add/Remove Programs area in Control Panel?

I'm not too familar with Orion Studio's software. Did you try there sight for any trouble shoot solutions?

Yes I used control panel to remove the software,
and I'm going to do a search of the registry
and get rid of unused entries. I've been emailing Orion Studio's about the problem, they keep talking about a default player & decoder.
Which I don't understand. It really confuses me how my computer will play almost a whole chapter
perfectly then lock up. But I'll keep trying.

I have never had this problem til I got Pearl Harbor for Christmas. There is a freeze during the scene when Affleck writes the girl from England, so maybe the problem is software?
