How often do find you have a defective disc?

I am asking if some people seem to have the luck I do with disks that are deffective and just need to be replaced. Out of my collection of 300+ I seem to run into a bad disk every 20 or so disks. within the last couple of weeks I've had to take back Planet of the Apes and Ghosts of Mars cause they were bad pressings. Of course I learned to keep the good 'ol receipt whenever I get something new just in case.

I've seen all kinds of crazy things. Pixel break ups, bad layer switches, audio dropouts of all different kinds, glitches that lead to a chpt just repeating over and over etc. etc. Every time I buy a new movie I wonder if it's gonna be bad and I'm going to have to make the long trip back to the store(not to mention wait to watch the movie even longer)and replace it. The replacement always works just fine but it scares me into thinking that my equipment is going and that would suck.

I've only hit about 3 or 4,.... out of over 1200 so far. Granted, I'm sure there are some movies &/or features that I haven't watched every single second of.... so there could (in theory) be others.

Two, only very minor glitches.

Snow White--subtitles come on at layer change.

Planet of the Apes---kicked back to menu at layer change--started right back at the layer change without a problem.

I own about 60 and have rented about 100 (rough guesstimate).

I've had 2 out of a little over 100.

1. Heathers (Tin) - Just got it and will exchange the DVd through Anchor Bay, as detailed on their site.

2. Farscape #3 - Closed Captions were corrupted. Exchanged thru ADV Films and the new one works fine! (I was afraid they were working from a defective master, since I tried another copy from another store and it had the same glitch.)

I've had a few damaged ones besides these, but they were due to buying pre-viewed ones or ones in damaged cases.

I have close to 400 DVDs in my collection and only five were originally defective and had to be returned for replacement. The replacements were all perfect.

Until recently, everything had been playing fine. Until I got POTA.
I took it back and got a new copy and it worked fine. Then there was Apocalypse Now Redux. I went through three copys of that before I got my money back. Now, it is Play Misty For Me. The audio fades in and out towards the end of the film and it begins to pause alot and stop completely. I will return it to Suncoast Friday. Other than that, I have had no problems with my other movies. They all work fine except the 3 above.

I've never had any totally defective discs. I've had a couple that have caused the player to go wacky, but it was an isolated event. I think it was just a crappy player.

I've only had one problem, and that was with my first Ghostbusters SE disc. The menus didn't work right, and halfway through the sound wasn't in place with the film. Exchanged it and the new one was fine.

I noticed when I watched my new 'The Haunting' DVD. One of the scenes from one of the last chapters, the image started breaking up into little tiny blocks. I guess this would be a pixelation prob. But I rewound it and played it again and it was fine. I played the same scene a couple more times and it was great. I guess that happens every now and then with a DVD player right? I've had mine for over 2 years now. And the DVD player still works great. I love my Toshiba.

I've never had a defective disk, and I've got a little over 200 DVDs.

I did, however, have a scratched copy of Akira in the special edition tin. The first disc had worked off the hub and the hub scratched it all to hell and back.

Thankfully, the store I bought it at got another copy in two days later and held a copy for me so I could exchange it....

When I ordered my Puppet Master DVD box set, part 4 had come off the thing and it had shaken around in there and made some minor scratches. Nothing too bad thankfully. Sometimes that will happen, thankfully anytime thats happened it's not too bad and doesnt effect the play.

Out of over 150 discs since February 2000, only two.

Rambling Rose - Nothing in layer 2 would play. Tried another that did the same thing. Gave up.

T2 UE - One trailer wouldn't play. I wasn't gonna worry about it but ended up using it as an excuse to return the disc for cash at Wal Mart (The addition of the disc's enclosed letter that said there could be problems is what got me my money back )

I just bought T2 Ultimate Edition Saturday night with some Christmas money. It turned out disc two was not working very well in my player. I know there is a note inside the package that says "may have trouble playing in some players" but I had borrowed a friend's copy and rented it and it worked fine. So I took it back and the new copy worked fine. That was my first defective disc.

The only disc i've ever had problems with was the dvd:

Space Camp - Made by anchor bay. I put it in about 4-5 minutes in it kept skipping chapters back and forth.

that's out of 89 titles.

I bought it online at ebay new so I went to the anchor bay website and they said just send it to them (disc only) and they will send a new one for free. I am still waiting for it though, even though I sent it out 1 month ago. oh well.

Speaking of T2: Ultimate Edition, I've got the DVD-18 disc they produced of it..the one with dual layers on both sides.

I've noticed, that whether it's in my Panasonic A115 or my Samsung DVD-1000, menu access is always as slow as Christmas. Transitions seem to lag for up to five seconds after I press the Enter key on the remote.

Anybody else have this problem, or is it just me?

I have 307 discs and only had one bad one. My Predator DTS disc came loose in shipping and got scratched inside the case.

I guess I've been lucky

Rented Chasing Amy and that broke up into a ton of pixels. After that I made a mad dash to watch all the DVDs that where piling up that I had bought but not watched.

Good Will Hunting had a jump in the picture. The replacement for it had the exact same jump (not at the layer change) and the picture broke up in one of the extras.

Picture froze and then jumped ahead on Detroit Rock City.

I had rented both Good Will Hunting and Detroit Rock City before buying so I was tired of both of them and happy they offered to replace my money instead of the disks again.

As a result of all this: 1) I now no longer rent most movies I want to buy, and I hope I don't get burned on the transfer. 2) This has slowed down buying my collection. I hate having to check every thing in 30 days and I have bunch piled up again.

Out of about 130 DVD's, I've only had one that didn't work. I bought Star Wars: The Phantom Menace from Costco. The first time that I played it, the menu's became pixelated and would not play. I re-inserted it, and then the trailers would not play. So I returned it for a replacement. Same thing happened. On the third try, I checked it out in the store before I took it home. Never had a problem again.

Two!

Out of my 50 or so DVDs, I've had two bad apples...

My Austin Powers 2 perpetually freezes up in my RCA DVD player, yet it doesn't when I run it on my DVD-ROM drive.

My copy of Pleasantville has a weird quirk too -- on my RCA DVD player, it misses a chapter at the layer change. No problems on the DVD-ROM drive.

Yet, I haven't had any other problems with my RCA player -- so I can't reduce it to a hardware or software problem.

I just had my first non-rental problem disc. My sis got me the Dune mini-series two disc set, and disc 2 looks like the skin of an orange! The disc skips chapters, freezes, and pixelates. Bad.

I'm not sure if I should ship it back to Amazon, or send it to Artisan directly. Anyone have any advice?
