DD5.1 in PEARL HARBOR

Sound "flutters" on PEARL HARBOR in DD5.1 mode. DTS works fine. I'm using a JVC "65" DVD player and a Kenwood 510 receiver. Any ideas?

Got it too on a Toshiba 6200

Yup, I've got the same glitching problem on my Toshiba 6200 player driving a Denon 989 AVR. Nice that DTS 6.1 works, but it is too bad that this is DD5.1 is the default and you have to go to setup to change it rather than just switching tracks on the fly.

Questions or concerns about new DVDs including Jurassic Park 3 and Pearl Harbor? - 12/21/01

Valued ONKYO Customers,

During a recent software testing session in our labs we have encountered a problem with several newly released DVDs that we want to make you aware of. Specifically we have experienced problems with Jurassic Park 3 and Pearl Harbor. The problem in question is related to audio dropouts at various points throughout both movies when playing the Dolby Digital soundtrack. After conducting a thorough investigation into this issue we have identified what we believe to be the cause of the problem and would like to make you aware of our findings and a recommended solution.
I was at a local High end shop auditioning some B&W CDM speakers, and we experienced the problem. I was coming here to check on reports and the good people at Onkyo are on top of things It's interesting that a major manfacture is taking this kind of inititive(sp?) with glitches like this. The full story can be read here.

Good luck to all with this "little" problem.

j

I have NOT experienced this problem on my Pioneer gear. I own this DVD, so I will watch the DD version tonight. TO make sure I fully understand, the audio will dropout COMPLETELY at some points in the movie and then return or will it vary in volume ("flutter")?

Does it happen at any specific spots?

My gear:

Pioneer DVL-919 DVD/LD player
Pioneer Elite VSX-24TX receiver

Since Pearl Harbor is a THX Mastered DVD, I put my receiver in 'THX Cinema' mode. Do you think this might impact the incorrect behavior?

Peace.....

It is terrific that Onkyo is looking into this! I found it on Jurassic Park III sure enough. Turns out we just rented it. It is a complete dropout in sound every 10-30 seconds and appears to happen in all DD 5.1 modes. So going to THX Cinema doesn't appear to help. Happens in vanilla DD5.1 too.

Ok, I watched disc 1 of Pearl Harbor last night in DD 5.1 and THX Cinema mode and everything played just fine. NO dropouts or anything.

If Onkyo thinks it's a problem with the DD mastering, I wonder why ALL players/receivers don't experience the problem.

Hmm........

Peace.....

I would guess because there is ambiguity in the decoding spec. Feels like there is some unusual encoding pattern and that the Onkyo DSP takes some time to recover. Just a guess.

Dolby has confirmed that there's been some problems with recent AC-3 encoded bitstreams and decoders - apparently, they've added features to the bitstream for HDTV broadcasts and they are being set incorrectly when encoding DVD's - this affects certain later-model receivers. I have a Sony EP9ES AC-3 decoder, DVP-S7700 DVD, Panasonic DVD-RAM DMR-E20, and a Pioneer DVL-700 and have never had any trouble with ANY title in AC-3. Nor have I experienced any form of trouble in DTS with my Millennium 2.4.6 DTS decoder.

Cheers!
Ty C. :-)

"FLUTTERS" on more discs!!

I have experienced these "Flutters" in sound on a number of discs:

STAR WARS - EPISODE 1 has 5 or 6 drop outs
DIE HARD 1,2,3 - DH 1 has 2 drop outs, DH 2 has 2 and DH 3 has about 4.

I used to have a problem with TERMINATOR 2 but for some strange reason plays OK now!

The drop outs happen at different times each time I watch a film and is REALLY off putting:rar:

My setup is TOSHIBA 2107 player and DENON 3800 amp connected by coaxial.

I dread watching a DVD for the first time in case it deciedes to have a flutter!:flush:
