My DVD player suddenly won't read my Gladiator disc...

I put Gladiator in yesterday and could NOT get it to play. My DVD player chokes down half way through the disc read process and gives me a screen msg. something to the effect of "cannot read this disc, put another type of disc in". I cleaned the disc good but that didn't work. I've watched The Mask of Zorro and Jaws since the Gladiator failure and they both loaded and played fine. I have a Panasonic DVD RV-65 player if that helps. Any input is appreciated.

Keith,

If you've played other disks all the way through after Gladiator and they all worked fine, then the problem could be the Gladiator disk itself.

If you ever have a read error, power off your DVD player, then unplug it, then plug it back in.

Try two things with this Gladiator disk. First, clean it. It could be smudged of have some debris on it. Second, try the Gladiator DVD in another DVD player. By using a proces of elimination, that should then resolve for you. Either it was an isolated event, the disk was dirty, or the disk needs to be replaced.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Great movie by the way.

Yes, I was planning on letting my brother take the disc home with him and try it in his player. Only problem is he doesn't leave until after New Year's.:-(

I'll try unplugging the DVD player and then plugging it back up.

You're right, GREAT movie and possibly my favorite DVD. Why couldn't this have happened to my Spartacus Universal disc, that way I'd simply buy the Criterion.:-(

Fingers crossed on getting this problem resolved.

I cleaned the disc good last night. I see no blemishes on it. I also unplugged the DVD player and plugged it back up. It still won't load. I put Disc 2 of the Gladiator set in and it loaded fine. I can't BELIEVE this has happened to 1 of my favorite DVD's.

Keith,

Dang, bummer.

One last test, try that disk on another machine. Try and play the same part of the movie that glitched on your player. Any problems, get that disk back to the store, pronto...

I had the same problem with Beastmaster on my GE 1106p DVD player. I let someone try it out on their DVD player and it worked fine. It boiled down to me needing a new player so I bought a Sony DVD player this time and it worked fine. It my be your player. I would invest in a new DVD player soon.

That's my next move..to let someone else try and load it on their DVD player. Flash, I ordered the disc from Columbia House online about 5 months ago. Looks like I may be stuck w/it.:-(

If it works on my brother's DVD player I may invest in a new player. You guys have been making me nervous w/your kick ass players anyway.:-)

I will update you guys after new years when my brother takes the disc home with him.

Some DVD players are just not friendly with certain DVD's.

Luckily I've never had a problem with any DVD I've ever bought, except one time a smudge on T2:UE. All my DVD players are Sony, except my portable, which is a Panasonic and my ROM, which is a Toshiba.

Based on the subject, is it correct that Gladiator DID play at one point and is NOT playing now?

Peace.....

That is correct tomdkat..I've had Gladiator several months and watched it many times w/absolutely NO problems. That's what makes this so puzzling.

Hi Keith, if you hold the disk up does it look bent at all? It could have gotten a curve from taking it off the spindle in the case.

You could try putting it inside a book for awhile, (cover with a kleenex or something first)

marty..my disc seems to be as even as any of the others. I'm positive now it's my player. I've heard strange "clicking" noises from it from time to time, but the picture always seemed o.k. and I just thought it came w/the territory. Looks like I was wrong.

I've been having the same problem with my portable Panasonic LV75. I've had it for over a year, and then all of a sudden, about two months ago I started getting that error message when trying to play some but not all of my DVDs. The crazy thing is that if I keep reloading the disc, or turning the player off and on, most of my discs eventually play fine after anywhere from 10 to 30 attempts. I've got upwards of 50 DVDs now, and only about 6 of them have ever had this problem.
