DVD plays RSDL?
I recently bought a Sony DVP-NS300 and for xmas I got Dante's Peak, which has RSDL (reverse-sprial-duel-layer). RSDL is so they can jam 4 hours of stuff on one disc, and you dont have to flip it over in the machine. The problem is I cant read the bonus features, the movie is fine. According to Sony this unit does not have "duel"lasers or whatever and physically flipping the disc doesnt help. The bonus features are listed in the movies brochure, but not on the on-screen menu. Am I missing something here or do I need to take this machine back to Costco?

Re: DVD plays RSDL?
Quote:
dual lasers are included with some players to improve Audio CD play back (one laser for DVD, the other for CD Audio) 2 versions of Dante's Peak exist on dvd, the Dolby Digital version that has all the extras and/ the DTS version that has no extras, It could be that you accidently got the DTS disc in the DD case. Does the disc have DTS printed on it (or is it mentioned in the audio menu) ? |

Um... I'd guess that you're missing them when you navigate the menus. Are you navigating the menus? No offense, but I can't see what you're doing from here and a buddy of mine got a player recently and it was set to automatically play the movie when he put a disc in. He was under the impression that none of his movies had special features. Make sure you're in the disc's interactive menus and not the Sony on-screen menus. Look for a menu item that says special features, extras, or something to that effect.
As for RSDL, I haven't got that movie, but did you notice a layer change during the movie? Usually the movie will freeze for a second when you go from one to the other. If your Sony is like mine you can go into the on screen menu and set it to display the current layer. Most likely with that disc (but again, I don't own it) the beginning and end of the movie will be on different layers. Start the movie. Set the display to layer (rather than bit rate) and turn the display on, then skip to the end of the movie. The layer indicator should go from layer 0 to layer 1, or vice versa. If that happens there is nothing wrong with your disc's ability to read both layers. There is a possibility that the movie may be all on one layer and the extras on the other (Particularly since it has an hour long documentary) but a defect in your player would only cause the extras to not play correctly -- it wouldn't make them not appear in the menus! - Jellodyne

Found Problem! Buyer beware!
"cw2000" was right...I have a DTS version, so there is too much info with the surround sound AND bonus features (plus the movie) to fit on one disc. The confusing part was it came with a brochure that listed the bonus stuff and no mention that it DID NOT contain the bunus stuff. I guess for a purchased movie, surround sound is better then something you may watch 1 or 2 times.
