The Royal Tenenbaums

I call it the amazing 57 second layer change. Here's what I just wrote to Criterion:

(Player: Pioneer DV-525)

Disc One freezes at exactly 54:33, which I assume to be the layer change. At this point the player just displays the time frozen at 54:33 and the image remains frozen.

Upon double checking this problem, I've found that it unfreezes approximately 57 seconds after freezing and the remainder of the film plays normally without complications. I've also found that skipping ahead until the player reads 'chapter 8' or simply accessing chapter 8 directly allows for moving forward sooner, and also by going to the exact time 54:34 in time search.

I love this film and hate to see a problem like this. While it is something that can be manually recovered from, it's obviously not the way it's supposed to be and is highly annoying.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions as to how to remedy this situation. I will try to exchange the disc for another at the same store, but most likely the whole batch is going to have the same problem.

Thank you.

Jeff

And upon further investigation, I've found that it does this regardless of which audio track is selected, however.. with the 2.0 surround track, it played normally I'd say 2 times out of 5.

Perhaps it has something to do with the fruit of the looms (tm) on the disc :p

but it sounds like a shitty layer change to say the least

Ya' know, I had the same problem with Hamburger Hill when I was still using my General Electric dvd player (which is in my closet now).

I bought a new Sony dvd player in November of 2001 and have watch Hamburger Hill ( a most watched disc for me) many times since I hand my Sony and it plays just fine. With the GE player, it had the same trouble you described with your Roal T disc, Underpants.

But not anymore.

Mayhap, you need a new dvd player?

I could be wrong though, it may very well be you Royal T disc.

I would second that... When did the 525 come out? It might be worthwhile getting a NEW player if nothing else but a firmware upgrade....

Is this the ONLY problem disc for you?

Peace......

It's only the 3rd disc I've ever had a problem with. (Rambling Rose [original release] wouldn't play anything in layer 2, Sixth Sense Vista freezes early on). I hardly think it's worth getting a new player just for a couple discs that have minor problems. (I'd consider major problems being unable to finish the movie).

However if you guys really think that's necessary, feel free to contact me for my address to send funds to..........

Well I exchanged it for a new copy, and surprise, still does the same thing. No biggie though, I can simply hit one key on the remote each time I watch it when it gets to that point and I can live with that.

I accidently left one of the inserts out when I returned the first one btw. Silly me!

The same thing happened to me at the same spot. The only difference is that my dvd player completely shutoff. This has never happened to me before. I have an RCA player and have had since 99.

Yup, it seems that Criterion fudged the layer change. My Pioneer frezzes at the same spot although for only about 30 seconds. I tried it on my Apex 300A and it freezes only for a brief moment but very noticible. I hope Criterion comes up with some resolution.....

I also have a Pioneer DV-525 and also have the freezing problem. I've gone back to replay it multiple times, and the freezing occurs about half the time. I've emailed Criterion support from their website and hopefully I'll get a reply soon.

Now you've got me curious.... I'm going to rent this from Netflix and see what happens on my Pioneer DVL-919. It might be a little while, but I will report back when I can...

Peace....

hmmm

okay, forget the layer change thing....i watched it on my sony, and there was no issue with that...HOWEVER, am i the only one seeing the weird colour balance shifting?...the colour temperature changes during shots (not between edits, during a shot), and it's VERY distracting...oh, and MASSIVE pixels when chas and royal confront each other in the closet with all the games (when the lights are off...pixel city)...i hate pixels

anyway, a dozen posts in here, and nobody else seems to notice this...hmmmmm

With the exception of the layer change, the movie looks and sounds just fine. No color change no sound imbalance. But get this...my wife was watching the movie last night and I waited for the monent of the layer change. NOTHING HAPPENED. It played flawlessly through it. I don''t know if this is the case but when I read about it here, I put in my copy and went to the part and it froze. But she just played it from the beginning with no problem. I give up.....

Peace....

Sorry, forgot to say my models. They're Pioneer DV-525 and APEX 600A. I let it play again earlier today fom the beginning. Smooth change. I pooped it out then put it back in and went right to the layer change and it froze. I'm guessing I shouldn't do that. But it's only on the Pioneer that this happens.

Well, I've pretty good run of luck with my stone age Pioneer DV-414 but it looks like my luck has run out. I'm having the same problem with the layer change and I've also exchanged discs.

Oh well, looks like another very good reason for me to upgrade to the Malata 520.
