Progressive scan & Shallow Hal movie
Movie won't play in our DVD player. We went back got another copy, Shallow Hal still would not play past the FBI WARNING.
Complained to Blockbuster. "Yes we are having a lot of trouble with that movie, you need PROGRESSIVE SCAN to see this movie and several others, like ATALNTIS." Also the PROGRESSIVE SCAN dvd players are more expensive. "The cheap ones are cheap now because they are getiing rid of them." Blockbuster said. We are on our second DVD player, this one is a SAMSUNG EXTIVA. We have not had trouble with a movie before. In reading here I see that we might be able to turn on PROGRESSIVE SCAN. We will check. (We saw the movie, we played it in our pc with DVD software and hooked it up to our tv with cables.) QUESTIONS: 1. Is it only one company that is making these dvd's that need PROGRESSIVE SCAN ? 2. Is it anything to do with Copy Protection? 3. Can the dvd makers please fix this right away, please! I would really like some input. Yours Truly dv crook |

The progressive thing is hogwash. Some BB employees talking about things they apparently don't know anything about.
Regular NTSC television is interlaced. The TV draws every other line on the screen, then goes back and draws the other half. A progressive signal draws all the lines in one pass. For reasons I won't get into, progressive images look much better. Anway, with a progressive DVD player, you also need a progressive capable TV. Not just any TV can display progressive signals. At any rate, no DVDs require progressive playback. It sounds like Shallow Hal is having some incompatibility problems with your player.

More info on Progressive vs Interlaced
http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volum...e-10-2000.html
DVDs are based on MPEG-2 encoding, which allows for either progressive or interlaced sequences. However, no one ever uses progressive sequences on DVD, because the players are specifically designed for interlaced output. Interestingly, while the sequences (i.e., the films and videos) are never stored progressive, there’s nothing wrong with using individual progressive frames. This may sound like a semantic distinction, but it’s not. If the sequence is progressive, then all sorts of rules kick into place, which ensure that the material stays progressive from start to finish. Whereas, if the sequence is interlaced, then there are many fewer rules, and no requirement to use progressive frames. You can mix and match interlaced fields and progressive frames to your heart’s content, as long as each second of MPEG-2 data contains 60 fields, no more, no less. (PAL DVDs have 50 fields per second.) The progressive frames, when they are used, are purely for compression efficiency, but the video is still interlaced as far as the MPEG decoder is concerned. HUMM! |

If it DOES play fine, contact your DVD player manufacturer and see if they can upgrade the firmware in your DVD player or do something else for you. How old is your DVD player? When did you buy it? Peace...

I'll second the no progressive scan needed. While I do have a progressive scan player (Toshiba), it isn't being played that way because I don't have a compatible TV. The movie played fine on my HT player and also on my PC.
