problems with JVC players and closed-captions?

Hi to all,

I recently picked up a new JVC player to replace my 4-year-old RCA player, and as I played DVDs from my collection, I noticed that I couldn't get the closed-captions to come up on any of my DVDs. I use the regular composite connections and never had a problem with closed-captions with my RCA player.

I ended up returning the JVC player and picking up a Panasonic player, which so far has no problems displaying CC.

Is this a regular problem with JVC players? I once saw a thread in the alt.video.dvd Usenet newsgroup a year ago about this exact problem, where owners of JVC players complained about this problem. I thought it might be a player-specific problem, but it seems like all JVC players behave this way.

Some people have reported that S-Video connectors somehow remove the CC. When they switched back to composite connections, the CC worked.

I really liked the JVC player and wanted to keep it, but having the ability to display CC is important enough to me that I couldn't keep the player.

I'd like to know if any other people with JVC players have experienced this same problem. If I just had a faulty JVC player (I bought the XV-S300BK, if it matters), I might consider returning the Panasonic for a JVC player that does display CC properly. But if the whole line of JVC DVD players have this problem, I will probably never got a JVC player again.

Any info or experiences with JVC players would be appreciated. Thanks.

Moved to Glitch Exhaust since we're talking about problems with JVC DVD players and closed captions.

Peace....

I own the JVC XV-SA70BK progressive player and I don't even turn the CC on the TV when I play a DVD. I take it the DVD Subtitles do not suit you?

I played a cheapy DVD not too long ago (I forgot which) that had no DVD subtitles in the DVD itself, but when I put on the CC on my TV, it displayed the text...and I have mine on composite connections (red, green & blue connectors).

Strange issue ya got there charlie.

Thanks for the reply. Subtitles are fine with me when they're included on the DVD. But I have run across a fair number of DVDs that do have CC, but no subtitles, like the Sex and the City discs, or any of New Line's Infinifilm DVDs.

Some Artisan and MGM DVDs have French and Spanish subtitles, but no English ones. Some of those DVDs do at least have CC. I think Jacob's Ladder and the Rambo DVDs are like this.

Having closed-captions is an important enough feature for me to consider when getting a DVD player. It shouldn't really be an issue, since the CC is part of the video signal that should be passed through. I was surprised that it didn't work on the player that I picked up, and it reminded me of a newsgroup thread that I read about JVC players and CC not working.

Thanks for your input. At least I now know that it's not the entire line of JVC players that have this problem, but maybe just a few specific models.

If it does, that would be the first to have subtitles. I have Rush Hour 2, and rented 13 Days, Blow, and 15 Minutes, and none have subtitles, only CC.

The way Infinifilm seems to work, the subtitles were used to bring up the interactive menus when the Infinifilm version is played.

It has been awhile since an Infinifilm was released, so John Q might be a little different than the previous titles. I look forward to renting it in the next week or two and see if they figured out how to have subtitles along with their Infinifilm features.
