Choppy picture during panning

On many of my dvd's i've experienced choppy picture playback
especially during shots with the camera panning or sweeping
through a room or something.
I admit that i use a cheap and probably bad dvd player:
Mustek V520, but i have not had any problems with my dvd's
except this choppiness during camera panning.
I mostly buy R1 dvd's and i've heard something about this
being a R1 problem..
Is this true and if it is, can someone please explain why?

What kind of TV are you using? If you are using a high definition display, of some sort, you just might be experiencing interlaced artifacts ("stair stepping") as the camera sweeps around.

I've seen that on a few movies, like What Lies Beneath.

Is your DVD player interlaced only or progressive scan?

Peace.....

If you mean judder during pans then this is a feature of NTSC dvds which have been created from film masters.

NTSC is 30 frames per second, Film is 24 frames per second.

To transfer film to NTSC every fouth frame of the 24fps source is repeated to bring it up to 30fps. Normally you don't notice it but is can easily be seen on camera pans.

If you have a PAL tv then the conversion is from 25 fps (film) -> 30 fps (NTSC) -> 25 fps (PAL, via speeding NTSC up by 4%) can make the frame judder more apparant, it does depend on how well you tv/player can cope with the signal (if the player and tv have NTSC modes that can help)

Yes,
I have a PAL TV but i dont know if it has specific NTSC support.
I dont think so though, cause when i switch to NTSC mode
on my Mustek 520 the screen goes black/white...
So...if i save some money and buy a progressive scan player
and a TV with NTSC compatibility, then my camera panning
experiences should be just fine??

By the way, thanks for answering to my question..
