Monsters Inc Problem

Just played Monsters Inc in my dv-525 Pioneer player(which will play just about anything-I've had very little trouble with it) and it freezes just before the dual-layer pause(about 84 minutes into the feature). I tried it several times on my 525 and it happened every time. I tried the disc in y crappy region free player(I forget the model, but it has trouble with even slightly scratched discs or complicated SE's) and it played fine. Anyone else have a problem like this with Monsters Inc?

I think we'll all have a better chance of answering the question once the disc comes out tomorrow

I have a Sony 550D, and the layer change for me freezes for about 1 second...strange, only because it's almost at the end of the movie...but no lock-up/freeze...just a plain ol' layer change freeze

videoworx, i have a 560D, so if you have a problem, chances are i'll have the same problem amplified 2x.

Great... so much for a skipless-disc for me.

one day, one of these companies will get off their asses, and put a ram chip in DVD players that reads ahead, so when the layer change shows up, we won't notice it....

btw, the layer change on Monsters Inc is pretty annoying, only because it is 5 minutes before the end of the movie, and it could have been placed slightly more inconspicuously in the previous shot (where there is little motion)...otherwise a very nice DVD set...

BTW, it's a 2 disc set like gladiator...i switched the discs around, so the feature is not on the flappy thing...you never know

I pre-ordered Monsters Inc directly from Disney, because I wanted the litho's...they shipped it last wednesday, and I received it on Saturday...Did the same with Snow White last year, and I got it a week before the street date. Just lucky, I guess...

Monsters Inc. disc locks up...

I purchased Monsters Inc. and had my Sister over with her kids Sunday to watch it. First off, great movie! Visuals are superb !

However, it locked up on me and I had to scan forward a bit to make the movie continue. Anyone else experience this ?

PS. I've never had this problem on any new dvd with my Pioneer Elite DV-05 player.

It might be that particular DVD or something with the encoding of Monsters Inc that is causing your DV-05 grief. My Pioneer DVL-919 has played EVERY NEW DVD I've watched on it flawlessly, but Ben Hur always pixelates and freezes at a certain spot. I do NOT see this behavior on my portable Pioneer PDV-LC10 as it has newer firmware.

Even though the DV-05 is a good interlaced player, it's rather old and by virtue of the fact it's played NEW DVDs without problems indicates the firmware it has is great. However, upgrading to a NEW player should get you much newer firmware that should fix this any other problems with various DVDs.

Even with the handful of DVDs I've had problems with on my DVL-919, I'm still VERY happy with the performance of the player and am not looking to replace it anytime soon. I don't think ANY player is 100% "glitch" proof but Pioneer players tend to be one of the least problematic players, generally speaking.

Something else you can try is another copy of Monsters Inc to eliminiate that particular copy as the culprit.

(Lastly, I moved this to Glitch Exhaust since its about Monsters Inc. I also merged this thread with the existing Monsters Inc thread).

Good luck!

Peace.....

I just put in the Monsters Inc DVD 1 into my HP 9900 drive...

The main menu and playing the movie seems fine... The rest of the menu screens are very strange. I can see the images in the background, and menu options are highlighted when i move up and down, but the text is missing. Either that or it's black text on a black background.

I'm going to watch the movie and check out DVD 2 a little later, hopefully I can still get access to all the special features with this drive... it's the only DVD player I have available right now.

Monsters Inc. Freeze Up

I also am having a problem with Monsters Inc. freezing up at 84:01 on my Pioneer DV-505. I have been using that player for over four years and have almost never had problems. It seems that most people that are having problems are using Pioneer players.---MBJ

I have the exact same player, and also get the exact same problem. I've emailed disney and am still awaiting a reply. The only other DVD I have the same problem with is the Royal Tenenbaums Criterion collection.

yup, I was using PowerDVD too I'll have to look for some other freeware player. Well, I'm glad to hear it works on normal DVD players.

You can add me to the list. I have a DV-414 and it freezes at the layer change. But on my Pioneer HTD-510 it plays fine after about a 1 sec pause. I'll try a new one but it looks like it is a problem on some Pioneer players. I haven't tried the portale yet but I'll post if there is a problem.

I have the same problem on my Pioneer DV525 and Panasonic A110. I know the A110 is old now (2nd generation) but it's worth mentioning to add more models to the list.

I have a Pioneer DV-333 and it doesn't freeze, but it pauses longer than the usual layer switch on other dvds, for about 1.5 seconds right at the 84:01 mark. I think it's one of the ugliest layer switches ever.

At last someone with a non-pioneer player is reporting this problem (not that this is good, but at least it isn't -just- pioneer players).

I'll call my friend that owns the video store where I bought this movie on Friday. I'll ask him to question any customer who rented this movie (or bought it) on this problem and then post the results here.

My Pioneer DV-626D seems to do OK, but the layer change is a bit more noticeable/slow than I would like.

Couldn't even watch the movie

I have a Pioneer DV-333 (R1) and did not even get to the movie at all. I could watch the previews and trailers at the beginning of the feature film dvd (and everything on the bonus dvd), but once I pushed the menu button on the feature dvd, the screen went black and I could not get past that point. I've never had a problem with a dvd before, but this was just like a black wall went up.

I'm kind of encouraged that someone with the same player could at least watch the movie, but it was still annoying as heck.

I haven't watched the entire movie but I did notice that the sound got real quiet during the interaction between Mike and Roz just as he comes into work. I am playing the video my laptop running Windows XP and WinDVD 4. I replayed the section 4 times with the same audio issue.

The volume level is normal when he first starts talking to her then it gets quieter and finally picks back up about 5 seconds later.

Yup, add me to the list of Pioneer DVD player owners that are having problems. My disc freezes up at 84:01 on my Pioneer Elite DV-38 as well. Bummer!

Well I tried it on my PDV-LC10 and it locked up at 84:01 just the same. It did work on my HTD-510 but neither of the other Pioneer players. I'm sure it will work on the PS2 but I probably won't try it.

EDIT: The real rub in all of this is the fact that the P&S doesn't have the layer change. and plays fine.

Well, I looked at this thread because I was just watching it on my DVL-909 until guess when- 84:01! It freezes and flags my sound system to PCM. If you hit chapter skip forward it will play past that, but I don't want to have to do that- I'd rather buy it on LASERDISC! :p I checked it on my Playstation 2 and it got through that part fine, but the Pioneer is still my main player so if a disc won't play on it then it won't play at all as far as I'm concerned. This is only the second disc this machine has had trouble with (the first was Simitar's "American Bullfighter" disc, it won't play Part 2!). The only other disc I've heard this player's had trouble with was Devil's Advocate (the first printing, not the edited reissue) which is why I opted for the laserdisc of that.
I'll have to call Disney's 800 number tomorrow and find out if they're gonna fix this. If they don't, they better send me a free laserdisc of it :p

I was reading this thread so I decided to check it out on my Pioneer DVL-700 and it played through that part with no problem whatsoever. The layer change was obvious, but not a problem. I use this player mostly for laserdiscs because I have a progressive scan Sony that I use for DVDs. I do find it interesting that all you folks with Pioneers are having problems with this title when I didn't. The DVL-700 was Pioneer's first LD/DVD player (manufactured July 1997) and you would think that if any player would have a problem with newer discs it would be one of the earlier players.
