Frailty DVD looks weird

I just watched this film and the disc played without a problem. But when I took it out I noticed that there was a huge spot on the disc. A big portion of the disc seems shaded in a strange patern. Anyone else got one like this?

I borrowed this DVD from a friend and noticed the exact same thing. It looks like a liquid stain. I have no idea what it is.

I just write to you to share my despair, I've got almost 500 dvds at home...
how the hell am'I going to find the time and the patience to check them all ????
if some of them are rot, what am'I gonna do?
replace them all?
and what if new titles keep getting rot, months after months?
maybe it would be wiser to stop buying these plastic craps and go back to theaters(or to vhs)

or maybe I'm gonna buy a machine-gun and pay all the big editors a little visit down there in hollywood!!!!

I can feel a Revolution is coming...Power to the People!!!!

seriously, what can we do?
are we gonna keep wasting our good and hardly earned money until we die?

You can always do an initial check on any discs, just by checking to see if they load up to the main menus without any problems. If you are truly worried, you can check 1 or 2 discs a day, starting with the oldest DVDs in your collection first.

It also seems that when discs do go bad, they go bad within a year or two of when they were manufactured. I'm taking a guess, but if a disc is at least 2 years old and has exhibited no playing problems, it will probably play fine for the rest of your life.

The main problems that make discs unplayable are manufacturing defects. Some defects are instantly noticeable, showing up the first time you try to watch a disc. At least you can get these exchanged within a 30-day period.

Other discs sometimes take some time for the defect to become visible, sometimes 6 months, sometimes a year. These are the problem discs, but they seem to be very rare.

The rate at which I've noticed discs go bad is maybe 1 out of 100 or 150 discs. You won't have to replace your whole collection or anything. If multiple DVDs do appear to go bad on you simultaneously, it's more likely a problem with your player (laser alignment) or some extreme weather conditions (like too much humidity) that is messing up your DVDs.

I wouldn't worry about your whole collection going bad or anything that widespread. No one has reported anything like this so far.
