The Others

Has there been any reports of trouble with The Others? The picture started breaking up on Chapter 12 (right around the layer change) on my Toshiba SD-3108. I bought this disc when it first came out and it didn't have any trouble on the same player when I played it.

I did notice that there is a milky colored ring around the center of the disc. Is this what it looks like when the two layers haven't been glued together properly and they begin separating? I'm going to go buy another copy to see if that one works.

I seem to remember hearing some complaints about Dimension Films discs, but I'm not sure.

I haven't had any trouble with my copy but I'll break it out over the weekend and give it a try.

Thanks. I was able to exchange it for another copy at Wal-Mart. This new copy didn't have the milky ring stain and it played fine. I just wonder if there was a bad pressing of those discs. I ask because the disc played fine originally on the same player. I hadn't watched it since and it wasn't dirty.

I'm just glad I was able to exchange it and that the exchanged copy works.

I don't have the Others disc, but I've had other DVD titles that played perfectly fine when I bought them, but had problems playing them 6 months or a year later. Some had the milky ring stain, others didn't.

In each case, I replaced the disc, and the new disc worked fine. I've concluded that each disc went faulty, probably due to manufacturing problems when the discs were first pressed. Sometimes when discs go bad, it takes some time for the problems to appear, which is why they work when you first view it, but may not a year later.

Just for your info, here are the discs that have gone bad for me:
ID4 (movie disc), Gladiator (bonus disc), Die Hard 2 (bonus disc), Aliens, Coyote Ugly (another Buena Vista title, like the Others)

I noticed a "ring" on my disc; looks like as if a liquid was spilled on it. My discs played fine the first time around; I have yet to watch them a second time.

I just finished watching my copy of The Others again and it still plays great! I bought my copy the day it came out so it might have just been your copy.

No problems with this DVD on my Pioneer DV-656a or my mom's DV-440.

Peace...
