Terminator 2 UE on Toshiba SD-2815
I just got this player about 3 weeks ago. Tried watching the T2:UE 2 disc set this weekend, and the player goes nuts at around chapter 36 of the movie. It pauses, then skips a few minutes ahead and plays a few seconds, then pauses again and skips again, and does this continuously for the rest of the movie. What's really frustrating, is that this same disc plays flawlessly on my 5 year old Toshiba SD-3107. One would think that their newer models would be more compatible that their old ones!
I called Toshiba's customer service, and they want me to try a different copy of the movie before they'll admit it's a problem with their player, even though I told them the same disc works on an older DVD player of theirs. Can anyone here share their experiences with getting glitchy Toshiba DVD players fixed under warranty? What am I in for? TIA! |

Well, if you can try another copy of T2:UE to eliminate a "bum disc" as a variable. I haven't dealt with Toshiba customer service, so I can't comment on that.
If the new copy of T2:UE misbehaves, don't be surprised if you go through hell getting Toshiba to do anything for ya. ![]() Good luck! Peace...

I owned a Toshiba 3800 for about 4 months. I bought it online on Boxing day, during that time the laser was replaced twice and still was not working properly. When I called Toshiba Canada and they didn't want to deal with me all they said was to take it back where I purchased it from and let them deal with it. I was very dissapointed with the company overall and will not in the future buy any of their products no matter what kind of deals they offer.

Well, I decided to just go ahead and return the player, given I only have 2 days left in my 30 day return policy. I really wanted to avoid the trouble of unhooking it from my system and boxing it back up, but after talking to Toshiba today, I have little faith they'll do anything to fix it.
As they instructed, I tried another copy of T2:UE, borrowed from my father in-law, and as I knew would happen, the movie freezes then fast forwards at around chapter 36. When I called them again today to report my problem, they took my info and said they'd get back to me after they research it, as they have no other reports with my player having problems with that particular movie. They said they usually attribute these problems to the discs themselves, and get the studios to send their customers more "compatible" replacement discs. No mention of a possible firmware upgrade or anything like that. The damn disc even plays flawlessly on my XBox, so it's a problem with their player! Hopefully this thread will help anyone else who may run into problems with this player. I've concluded that it just cannot handle DVDs with seamless branching. On another note, while I would agree with hipster on Toshiba's crappy customer service on their DVD players, I have to say that when it came to repairing my Toshiba big screen TV a few years ago, they were superb. Maybe they care more about servicing their big ticket products than smaller ones, who knows. |

I don't have a Toshiba player, so I can't speak for that, but I have read about other people complaining about the T2 UE disc glitching up on various sections of the movie. It's not a widespread problem, but there had been a few cases reported on the alt.video.dvd newsgroup. It could very well be that your disc has gone bad.
Luckily, my copy of the disc still plays perfectly fine, at least it did when I last checked it.

I wonder if T2:EE would exhibit the same behavior as T2:UE.
Peace...

I don't think the Extreme Edition uses seamless branching, as it only says it's the special edition of the movie, nothing about the theatrical version or extended special edition. I would have rather just sell my UE and buy the EE if it contained the DTS-ES audio track to avoid the hassel of returning this player. The EE would probably play fine on this player, but I'd hate to lose the DTS track.
Just to add to my experience I'm sharing here, the movie only glitches in the section of the movie where quite a lot of scenes were added to the theatrical version. It plays the entire first half just fine, up until the Terminator, John, and Sarah are on the road in the desert driving away from the city. From that point on, a lot of scenes were added in the special edition, like the Terminator smiling, the scene with Miles Dyson's family, etc. From there on, this player craps out playing the movie. |

Well, that certainly sucks.... I would have thought the SD-2815 wouldn't have this kind of problem as I've given the SD-2710 as a gift to a friend and it's worked flawlessly for her.
If you have the funds to spare, can you audition another 5-disc changer? Maybe get it from a place with a good return policy. If the SD-2815 is acting up on T2:UE, who knows what else it will have problems with. I hope you got a good deal on the SD-2815 when you bought it. ![]() Good luck! Peace...

Now press the 'Right' arrow key on your remote control and keep it pressed for a few seconds. 'The Future Is Not Set' will appear on the screen in red letters. You have now switched the disc to play the Theatrical Cut of the movie, which is otherwise accessible only as a high-definition presentation as a DVD-ROM feature. Please note however, that the interactive mode and the commentary track will not work in this presentation mode"
