Bad DTS Saving Private Ryan

I just bought the DTS version of Saving Private Ryan, but it is terribly distorted....completely unlistenable. I have to listen to the Dolby track instead. This is a huge disappointment, because I understood that the DTS track on this DVD was one of the best. My question is, is this a problem with my equipment, or could it be a bad disc? I have other DTS discs that playback without problem, but I have had this same issue occur with at least one other title (The Quiet American, I believe).
My DVD player is an Apex AD-660 piece of crap, by the way.

Interesting.l I had never heard (or read) any comments like this about this title. Can you try another copy (if you can find one) and see if that behaves simiarly?

If you're located in the S.F. Bay Area, I can arrange to meet you and bring a dts demo DVD I have with SPR on it and we can try that.

Peace...

Thanks for the offer, tomdkat. I'm up in Toronto, so that won't work out.

I will try your suggestion of finding another copy, though, and let you know what i find out. Thanks!

Tomdkat, if you're still interested...an update:

I complained to Amazon that the DTS track was unlistenable, and they immediately sent me another copy, no questions asked (very cool of them, I must say!). Anyway, the new copy did exactly the same thing...terrible sound. And I don't mean slightly tinny, or bass-heavy...I mean total distortion...as if I was underwater or something. You absolutely CAN NOT listen to it.
To make sure I wasn't going crazy, I popped my copy of X-Men 1.5 in, and the DTS sound was pristine. No problems.
So here I sit with two perfectly good copies of "Saving Private Ryan" that won't play DTS over my system.
I'm confused.

Do you have a friend with a DTS setup to try them out with?

If not i would try a local HMV store to see if you can switch the dvd for one in store. Since HMV is now associated through Amazon.ca (which sucks i liked the old HMV site on its own) They might be able to do something for you as in another switch of the DVD. Might be a new print of the dvd's that are faulty and maybe the ones instore have been there for awhile and could be an older version of the DTS track movie.

Worth a shot.

Final update. I took one of the SPR discs to a friends place and played it through his system. Guess what? It played perfectly. So, the DVD's are fine...it's apparently an equipment problem on my end. I suspect my Apex DVD player.

I still have no explanation as to why it will play most DTS titles fine, but not all. Oh well....time to upgrade.
