SAMSUNG HD 841 DTS problems

Every movie I watch on DTS on this player will have dropouts on sound every few minutes. I also have a new YAMAHA receiver...I know its not that...

But this player being high def...I am upconverting the video to 1080 on my Sony WEGA widescreen--but does that affect audio output? It is hooked up with digital output as well.

Any ideas??? It is really bothersome...and it never happens in conventional 5.1 sound...just DTS.

First, how did you eliminate your Yamaha A/V receiver as the culprit? Did you play the same DVD with dts audio on another DVD player connected to it?

Second, what happens if you play the movie at 480p w/ dts audio? Do the dropouts still occur?

Third, do you get any audio dropouts when listening to the DD audio?

Last, which DVD(s) give you problems with dts audio dropouts? You indicated every DVD with dts audio gives you problems but that's vague. Would you post a few titles so we can get an idea of the kinds of DVDs that are giving you grief.

Peace...

I have not tried another reciever...

DD works fine on each of the titles tried thus far.

Titles affected up to now
Collateral
Kill Bill 1 & 2
Final Countdown
Jurrasic Park

I haven't completely run troubleshooting on this yet...I just thought I would post to see if there was any history of DTS and this particular model.

BTW...my other DVD player--a 6 year old Pioneer plays these DVDs fine.

I will try some other things and post again.

Ok, if your Pioneer DVD player connected to your Yamaha receiver does NOT result in the dts dropouts, you can eliminate your receiver as a variable.

Try running the Samsung HD841 at 480p with dts audio and see if the dropouts still occur. None of the titles you name have any kind of history with dts audio problems, as far as I'm aware, so it might be something with your DVD player.

You might need to get your player serviced.

Peace...

Well, this might mean you might have got a "bum" unit or something vs something "going bad" on it or anything.

Have you tried running the player at 480p w/ dts audio to see what happens?

Peace...

The 841 has been known to have DTS problems (among a list of other problems, it's not well regarded on other boards I lurk on)

That said, I have one as my main player and I think it's a great player for the price you can get them. I've never had a problem with DTS dropout.

You might have a bad unit.

MORE problems.

Most recently
(Greatest American Hero, Super Size Me)
the HD screen will "flash" momentarily before retuning(?) itself to 1080i.

I have been going to a few other boards as well and finding multiple issues.

Maybe this will get moved to the bedroom or rec room and used in 480--(no glitches thus far in DTS 480i but I want to do some more checking)

ANY recommendations for a better unit that will up-convert?

Up to this unit...I have been a fan of Pioneer units. Do they have a unit that upconverts?

Yeah, but nothing "affordable", meaning nothing in the < $200 price range.

The Toshiba SD-5970 or the Sony DVP-NS975V might be worth researching. The prices on the sites are MSRP meaning the "street price" will be much less. Also, check out discussion in the Hardware forum for DVD player recommendations.

Good luck!

Peace...

Samsung HD841

I have the same DTS problems with my Samsung HD841. I'm going to try the 480p suggestion. So far I'm not real happy with this player. Today it will not even work. It's saying "This disk cannot be played" " Please check the disk". It's doing this on all my disk. I have tried uplugging the unit from the wall hoping it may somehow reset itself. No luck so far. Any other suggestions like target pratice.
