The Incredibles

I noticed some pixelation during certain scenes. When Mr Incredible is shaking the tree to get the kitty out and during one of the huge explosions at the end. But I rewind it and don't see them. But there are a couple of instances on Disc 2 where they are noticible glitches that don't go away. Not too much to be concerned with I suppose.

Sorry, Pioneer 563A. This player seems to be hyper sensitive

No problems on mine, Sony DVP-NS775P. I've heard that this seems to be a disc issue. I think the thread at hometheaterforum has something about this, but people who have exchanged those discs have had luck with their new ones.

Ok, I'll break down and check this one out.... I'll borrow a copy from a friend.

If the pixelation happened only once, it might have been dust or something like that. I wouldn't be concerned unless it happens in the same place all the time or it happens each time the disc is played.

Peace...

I thought that might be the case too. Will check it out again. This time with commentary.

Thanks!

Okay, took it back and got another copy from Target. Same thing however! Must be the same batch. I basically got it off the same shelf. I should have gone to the side shelf instead. Then I picked up Clone Wars from Best Buy. Yep, pixelation! I have the worst luck.

Does the image look like that during playback? When you pause a movie, sometimes artifacts can be exaggerated a bit or they can be harder to spot.

What scene (chapter at least) from The Incredibles did you show above?

What video settings do you have for your DV-563a? It looks like the Pioneer is in video mode or something. What kind of TV is it connected to?

Peace...

Yeah, something is wrong here. Even "freeze" framed it shouldn't look like this. Looks like the images were zoomed with some sort of edge enhancement.

Yes, it does look that way during playback and is noticeable. Very split second because it is exactly one frame. The frame from the Incredibles was taken from the end credits before the names start. It happens in the menu also. Maybe it is SUPPOSED to look like that. Maybe a super hero lightning effect as "Mr. Incredible" punches the air. But not for Clone Wars. That is an error in the coding for sure. It happens 2-3 times as the girl (sorry don't know her name) is fighting General Grevious. This happens in the final chapter when the jedis are fighting General Grevious. I have not zoomed on these frames or anything.

I haven't done anything "special" to my player. It is normal settings with progressive scan. Surely it can't be my player if I can pause on it and repeat the same glitch over and over. The TV is a Sony XBR800, direct view widescreen HDTV. One of the nicest pictures I have seen and great for Pixar movies.

I should be getting a copy to watch tomorrow. DVD menus are usually "video" vs "film" so they will result in different video performance from your DVD player. I'll report back what I find even though I won't be able to post screenshots.

Peace...

Will likely be watching my copy of the Incredibles over the weekend. If you can post exact times of glitches, I'll know when to look for them.

The Increbiles:

End credit shot:
107:31

Clone Wars:
67:57

It might be my player. I just tried it on my roommate's Sony DVP-NS400D player and the pixelation for both the Incredibles and Clone Wars didn't show up on his. He has a Sony 4:3 TV non-HD. But it looks INCREDIBLY better on mine.

I have a copy of this in my hands right now and I'll be sure to check out the parts you mention (at least) tonight for sure if I don't have time to watch the whole thing.

Peace...

Ok, I watched the end credits on The Incredibles on my Pioneer DV-656a and the image was flawless. I then watched it on my Pioneer DVL-919 and DID see some artifacting during some of the "lightning" images.

The Pioneer DV-656a is a progressive scan DVD player in "Auto" mode, which means it will output a progressive signal when anamorphic material is detected. This player is connected to my Toshiba 57HX81 via component video connections.

The Pioneer DVL-919 is an interlaced only DVD/LD player with an S-Video connection to the Toshiba HDTV.

It could be an issue with that particular copy of "The Incredibles" you have and if you sent me your copy, I could take it for a test spin and send it right back. You make the call.

Peace...

You know I remember people posting screen grabs from Finding Nemo that looked just like that on the same model Pioneer player. I wonder what it is about Pixar films and that model.

I remember people posting screenshots as well, but mainly to disect the "glows" they say around Nemo, etc. I don't recall specific discussion about the DV-563a and Nemo. When I owned one myself, I never watched any Pixar movies on it (at least I don't remember doing so).

I know there are other DV-563a owners in the house. Would any of you give the above discs a spin and report back?

Peace...

I don't have a 563a, but I have a 656a, shall I give it a spin on my interlaced TV?

I played the widescreen version through my Panasonic DVD-CP67
and Panasonic PT43LC14 TV with no problems. I still have to check
out the 2nd disc. IIRC people at the home theater forum site were
having problems at the end credits also.

How old is the player? Pioneer has a firmware upgrade policy. Maybe an upgrade will solve the problem.

Sure and we can find out if the interlaced output results in any similar kind of artifacting as described above.

Peace...

I'll pick up this disc, but would the canadian have used a different compression house? If so someone needs to send me the US version.
