Million Dollar Baby subtitles won't turn off

Hi - I have a brand new Toshiba sd-4980 DVD player. This is a brand new model in fact. The first movie I tried on it was Million Dollar Baby widescreen. Remember the problem with Spy Game a couple of years back? Well, the same thing here - the subtitles default to ON and can't be turned off from the main menu or while the movie is running. But, it plays fine on my Toshiba sd-2109 which is about 5 years old - no subtitle issues. Anyone have a similar story?

thanks!!

Hmmm.. that's bizarre. Have you contacted Toshiba about this? I mean since it's a new model DVD player and all, I'm surprised it would have this kind of problem.

I guess you don't want to have to read, "Girlie, tough's not enough" each time you watch the movie.

Is Million Dollar Baby the only title you've had the problem on thus far? What other titles have you run through the player?

Peace...

It happened on The Jacket (2005) too. But.....I discovered the problem. My tv is brand new also, and the default setting for closed captions is "on" (!?!)

So, the tv was extracting the info from the dvd even though the dvd setting was "off". I figured this out because I was toggling between the French and Spanish subtitles and I noticed some of the words on the screen were still in English and in a different font. I checked the setup menu and there it was - closed captions "on".

Sorry to be such an idiot!!

thanks for the reply!!

Not at all! Great detective work!

I would have never thought of that and thanks for posting it as others can benefit from that info as well!

What make/model of TV are you using for others who have or are planning on getting that same set?

Also, have you cast your vote in this thread?

Peace...
