HP dvd writer 200i does not "see" non HP dvd r's
Hello everybody, I dont know if this is the correct forum for the problem I am having with my HP dvd writer 200i. I have only ever used this for DATA backup but it just does not seem to see non HP dvd disks which limits me to CD R and the size limitation this imposes. I presume this is a "known" issue? I can't believe I am the only one who has this problem. Can anyone help me out or explain the problem? I would be very grateful
Thanks, Ian |

Have you contacted HP tech support about this?
Peace...

Sorry. I can't explain the problem, but may want check to see if there is a firmware update. That drive also came out in 2002 and can only read +R media. If you have the latest firmware already, you may want to check into another drive. I know that option may not be disireable, but DVD writers are much better now and are also very cheap. I paid something like $260.00 for a 4x -R only writer back in 2003, but now I can get a 16X writer that can write to + and - R media and can also write to dual layer + and - R media for $30.00 online and maybe $70.00-$100.00 in the store.
You may want to check the DVD Writers section of VideoHelp.com Users post a lot of comments about the different models and their experiences with them. You could also check out New Egg for more user comments before you commit to buying a particular model or brand to make sure it is what you are looking for and that it performs well. Sorry I couldn't help more with the problem. Krycek |

That's a wacky problem, as aside from the manufacturer's ID most all blank dvds should be pretty much the same. At least as far as just being able to be useable goes. And I'm sure HP doesn't make they're own discs, they're someone else's just rebranded. If you can figure out who makes HP's discs, then maybe you can find blanks of those same manufacturer. But are you sure you have been trying the right kind of dvdr? Maybe the drive wants dvd+r and you've been trying dvd-r? That's the only think I can think of.
