Disc Rot! Check your Copy of . . .

LOTR: ROTK: EE

I couldn't believe it.
Disc Rot had beaten the fellowship. Mine is affected on Disc 2 of the set near the end. Right as Sam is pulling Frodo up after Gollum falls over the edge into the lava, it skips back to Eowyn and Merry on a horse. WTF I tried going back 3 or 4 times. I wiped it down and tried it again, and then I looked at it. There was discoloration in the outter 1/2 - 3/4 inch of disc that looked distinctly yellow on the silver disc. The disc isn't separating or anything (visibly at least), but it definately doesn't play right any more. Now I have to go and buy a new copy.

That disc isn't old enough to be susceptible to "disc rot".

More likely there was a defect in the original disc pressing. You might try contacting the place where you bought it to see if they'll still exchange it. Or check with New Line to see if they have heard of similar problems, and will replace your disc. Maybe you'll only have to pay the shipping.

I certainly wouldn't simply give up and run out to buy a new copy.

Doesn't the second layer "sweep" from outter edge to inner edge...?

I wonder if there is some reason for problems like this. Two DVDs I've gotten, have done something simular, The Cave(rental) and Stealth both jumped to a late chapter as soon as I plugged the discs in, jumps right to the end of the movie. You can rewind past that point, or select a chapter before then. On Without a Paddle, at various times in the movie, it would go back to a certain chapter.

One thing though, if I tried them in another DVD player(not the HTPC), they would all play fine. So, try your ROTK in another player if you can. BTW, I no longer use the HTPC, and haven't another of these problems. My thoery about the HTPC(because of that, and other problems I had with it), is that it's buffer to correct errors was gone, some software problem or something perhaps.

Chapter 70 is the chapter in question and my copy played flawlessly. Chapter 71 (Sauron's destruction) had some deep bass that went below my subs' bottom end.

All in all, everything was a-ok.

Roger, Roger, over and Audi.

Peace...

My copy of From Dusk Till Dawn(SE with Full Tilt Boogie) has major disc rot. Starts pixelating just before the vamps, vamp out. Lucky i just got the Polish version for 16:9 and DTS 6.1, it was my friend who I gave this too that discovered it.

Personally, I think that's the way it should be as long as it starts after "the dance"

Peace...

Layer changes can start anywhere on the disc! It’s down to dirty optics on the laser peak up mechanism, I have three DVD players, and two Laserdisc players, yes I’m still running Laserdisc.

There is one DVD player that is a little temperamental, and that would be the SONY DVP-S336 she’s having a little trouble with certain DVD titles now, but I do believe I can solve the discrepancy.

But that is why I have two more DVD players as back-up! Well there are some DVD titles that don’t play in some DVD players, they just simply lock up! And that’s where a back-up player comes in handy, the Pioneer DV-525 isn’t too bad she’s peaty robust.

The third is a Cello DR-810 DVD recorder I use this model mostly to transfer laserdisc titles over to DVD-RW for my own personal use, and she’s great for playing Ben-Hur, as this film cows up on the other players with some major glitches like, freezing half way though the film, so the Cell DR-810 acts as perfect back-up, are we starting to get the picture so far!

The image is not to clear due to the angle of the picture, and the way that the flash lit the image up, but starting from the top and working downwards is:

Cello DR-810 DVD-RW region 2
SONY DVP-S336 DVD region 2
Pioneer DV-525 DVD region 2
Pioneer CLD-1750 Laserdisc PAL / NSTC
Pioneer CLD-2950 Laserdisc PAL / NTSC
Furguson Videostar Hi-Fi stereo VCR PAL

That's quite the stack of hardware.

Be sure to post your home theater gear in the Your Home Theater forum.

Peace...

Geez! And I thought I had a lot of crap stacked up

I also still use my Laserdisk player, there are too many movies on that format that haven't made it onto DVD yet.

What exactly is DVD rot? I own a bunch of DVDs that look like the color (on the actual disk!) changes (some look like swirls!) but I don't have any problems playing them. The only disk I had that went bad was "Contact", but that was a major problem with a number of those disks...

Still waiting patiently for that one to make it onto HD-DVD.

CDs and DVDs are not perfect. Conditions such as heat or cold may cause problems to occur.

I'm not sure what "DVD rot" is, but they say that it has something to do with the "glue" that is used in the DVD sandwich that clouds the disc. Supposedly, they fixed the problem by changing the materials used.

I had a copy of Final Destination 2 that completely rotted within several weeks after I bought it on the day of its release. It's funny, I can sometimes get it to play on my PC, but it takes a long time for the disc to be recognized.

Yes unfortuanly they can but dvd rot is rare.It happens a lot less now then it did before 2000.I think it's because they use better adheasives.Cd's can suffer the same effect but like dvds it is also uncommon.

Dvd rot occurs mostly on dual layer disc when the glue between the layers seperates but it can also be bought on by lamination which is caused by a poor disc hub in dvd jewel cases. Some of these hubs are so tight that it can damage the outer layer of the disc when you take it off and put it on.Dust and moisture can get in this layer and cause the disc to rot.Fortuanly a lot of studios use better packaging now then they use to.One example of a poor hub I can point out is my copy of the Haunted Mansion. You can't hardly get it off the hub.
