If ganthc is to be believed,( ) it is the best Blu Ray player you can buy. Yes, with the added bonus of gaming in 1080P. It is thought to be upgradable to profile 1.1 ( which the 1400 is not ) and some are hoping for dts-HDMA upgrade for the PS3 which some speculate is possible. The down side? You have to buy the remote, or use the controller since it uses Blue Tooth for the remote, and no universal remote that I know of will work with it.

but, does this new 80 gig one upconvert standard dvd's to 1080p?

the CNET report from last year when it came out says no- they will be 480p

and, can it handle DD or DTS True HD? or is that just based on the HDMI cabbles capabilities?

I am running to best buy now, so can someone e-mail me at drichter33@charter.net before I make a mistake.

I mean, those true HD sound forms send the 5.1 audio in HD now, right? So wouldnt i want that since its on the back of most of the Blu Ray discs i have seen?

IIRC, the upcon issue was before it was enabled via firmware update. If the 80G doesn't, I'd be surprised.

If your receiver has HDMI, then you will be able to upconvert with the PS3, as well as get the advanced audio, like Tru HD, and dts HD ( MA is still questionable ( correct me if I am wrong, ganthc. ) ) If Blu Ray is the way you want to go, the PS3 is the best way to go.

When the Samsung hybrid player comes out, it WILL have issues by virtue of being their first player of this kind.

Peace...

The LG BH200 actually beat it to market as the first full-fledged dual format player.

Because the PS3 sends the audio via HDMI as PCM, what should my receiver say on the display? Normally for DD it says that, or DTS, or THX- whatever mode I choose or plays automatically when i start a DVD.

With the PS3 it said something like 'multi channel input'- is that right?
It doesnt need to say DD which is waht it was sending? Is that a general term to cover the fact that the signal is multichannel, but it could be a variety of types like DD, DTS, True HD, etc?

last night i looked at some of Spiderman 2 and was impressed in some parts with the color and clarity, but not truly blown away. In fact, some spots were still grainy and I even had little white specs flickering on the screen.

the scene where aunt may and peter are at the bank, the skin tones were still grainy, but later on it seemed to improve. There was even a point during that first SM / Doc Oc fight with Aunt May that my wife remarked "wow, that looked almost 3-D" so if she was impressed, then thats a good sign.

Not sure if this has anything to do with how the image is going from the PS3 via HDMI to the Onkyo TX-SR804, then from there to the Samsung 6187W DLP via HDMI. From what I understand, the receiver and tv both are 1080p capable.

Besides the fact that i had it turned down (it is noticeably louder than my other inputs, so I turn it down and then when I go to watch satellite it is extremely low) the sound was sharper then i remember for this movie, somuch detail and depth (part at the end when Doc Ok turns on the machine and the lasers shoot into the middle- flew around my room and the bass kick in was sweet)

Any thoughts?

That's right!

Correct. Technically your receiver has no idea what it is playing, just that it is a multichannel PCM signal. The PS3 is the one that knows and decodes the proper sound format.

I'm not sure if the other problem you describe is simply grain/noise in the movie, or if it is a hardware problem. White sparkles in a picture can sometimes be indicative of a faulty or poor quality HDMI cable, then again it might just be the disc itself. Try pausing the disc and see if you still see the sparkles moving - if so its a cable probem - otherwise its simply the disc's transfer.

Well, then you'd still be incorrect, as the dual-player is actually made by a company that is 51 percent owned by Toshiba.

Not quite since Samsung will be the brand, Samsung will take the heat. I'll be proven wrong if the player comes out and doesn't have issues as I think it will. If Samsung hasn't released a hybrid player yet, this WILL be their first irregardless of the actual manufacturer.

Peace...

Couldn't you have waited to point this out until AFTER I had a chance to read the original post? Sheesh!

That Amazon preorder and date has been up there for a couple of months now. I'd take it with a grain of salt.

Samsung: Dual-Format Blu-ray/HD DVD Player Now Shipping

Quote:
Despite reports to the contrary, Samsung says its BD-UP5000 dual-format high-def disc player is shipping "as we speak," and will hit stores at a price lower than previously announced.

Rumors of a delay for the manufacturer's first dual-format player surfaced earlier this week after a listing at Amazon bumped the player's release to January 15, but a Samsung spokesman told Dealerscope on Wednesday that the player is currently shipping to stores, and that it should be on shelves by "mid-to-late December."

The spokesman added that due to "recent activities in the marketplace," the player's suggested retail price has been dropped to $799 (it was originally announced with a $1,049 price tag, but that price was reduced to $999 in early September).

As we've previously reported, Samsung will be the second manufacturer to market an dual player capable of playing HD DVD and Blu-ray discs, following the introduction of LG's BH100 in January of this year.

Samsung says its BDP-UP5000 will support both BD-Java and HDi, as well as web-enabled supplements on both formats, via an Ethernet connection. In late October, the manufacturer noted that the player will require an upcoming firmware update to actually play back Profile 1.1 discs.

Samsung is one of the top consumer CE makers out there. Don't blame Samsung for BD's initial poor software quality (like Sony did) and profile confusion.

Pull the trigger and give us a review, credit is your friend

This is the first BCM7440 SoC player to hit the market. It may actually outperform the gen3 Toshiba offerings in HD DVD speed/functionality performance.
