Maybe the thread is only for real blu-ray players.

That's why I stated that I needed help, because I wasn't sure if the PS3 had a firmware update.

So far the ps3's 1.80 patch is fantastic. The upconversion is just as good as my other Sony upconvert player. I will probably still use that sd-dvd upconvert for sd-dvd's to save wear and tear on my ps3. But I was happy to see it worked. I haven't checked out games yet.

Good to hear. I have not updated yet. I have my rez setting on "auto" & am curious if the PS3 will downconvert to 720. How is 4:3 content on it? Mine fills the screen..

I haven't tried 4:3 yet. I tested out Freddy vs. Jason on both players, and they were pretty much the same, which was an improvement from before.

Got an actual 2.0 BDP-S1 firmware disc in the mail today. This is the first firmware disc I've gotten from Sony, usually I just get an email saying go download it from their site. Guess they figured this was an important enough one (ie allows the player to play the Pirates films) that they would send them out.

PS3 1.82 Update Out

Updating now. Allows playback of dowloaded AVC files or something.

I agree, with the comments, they need future updates for better audio from downloads.

Sony Computer Entertainment of America has today announced a new firmware update for the PlayStation 3, highlighted by an upgrade to the console's Blu-ray 1080p playback capabilities over HDMI.

Dubbed Version 1.90, the most significant enhancement for Blu-ray fans is the new 24Hz output setting for viewing of 1080p content over HDMI. Previously, the PS3's "Automatic" setting for video playback led to possible mismatch during video output of film-based sources with a frame rate of 24Hz, versus video-based sources with a 30Hz frame rate. Now, you can finally force the PS3 to ensure 1080p playback at 24Hz.

Other notable features of V1.90 include CD audio output up to 44.1/88.2/176.4kHz, the ability to change video output settings in real-time during game playback, custom bookmarks and the ability to eject a disc from the console's main main (previously only available via a dedicated button on the remote control).

For more information on how to access and download Sony's latest firmware upgrade via the PlayStation 3's built-in Ethernet and Wi-Fi capabilities, consult your PS3 player manual.

Wait, you're telling me you couldn't even eject a disc from the PS3 without paying extra for their remote?! Damn, that's a good scam. By the time they get to the PS4 they'll make you buy a seperate remote with the power button on it I suppose.

I think it was supposed to say eject the disc with the main controller. You can eject from the console itself.

Ah, okay. I thought it strange you'd only be able to play one disc if you didn't have the remote, but it is Sony after all so you never know.

New firmware for the BDP-S1. Oddly, the notes for this release are pretty much exactly the same as 2.10. I don't know why they keep listing adding the Dolby decoding since that's been there since firmware 2.0.

Quote:
This utility updates the BDP-S1 firmware to version 2.50, and provides the following benefits:

Improvements over firmware version 2.10:

Improves BD-Java compatibility to enhance interactivity with some BD-ROMs.
Additional improvements over original firmware:

Adds Dolby® TrueHD and Dolby® Digital Plus Audio decoding functionality.
Enhanced playback compatibility with certain BD-ROM format discs.
Improves BD-Java compatibility to enhance interactivity with some BD-ROMs.
Enhanced customer support capability

Corrects the output signal status information for audio output and display when Linear PCM 5.1 channel soundtracks are played via HDMI.
