New Panasonic Bluray, $600

Panasonic launches $600 DMP-BD10A Blu-ray player, bundles five films

Not too long after Pioneer went and introduced its second generation Blu-ray player, along comes Panasonic to follow suit, but unlike the BDP-LX70, we've got a pricetag as well as a few tempting reasons to pick this one up over the competition. The DMP-BD10A packs an audio upgrade that brings 7.1, Dolby True HD, and DTS-HD on board, and it incorporates Panasonic's EZ-Sync system for "one-touch operation" of your home theater. The overall design doesn't deviate too far from that seen in the first iteration, but you will find 1080p upconversion via HDMI, a 14-bit DA converter with 4x oversampling, support for BD-J, and compatibility between select HD camcorders via the AVCHD (H.264) codec. Notably, Panasonic is giving users two reasons to seriously considering its new offering, as the fairly reasonable $599.95 pricetag looks even better when you consider the five BD films (Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Transporter, Fantastic Four, and Crash) you'll be getting right in the box.

Wow, if it has analog, then this would be a good deal for PH.

I wonder if they'll let me exchange Crash and Fantastic Four for, y'know, good films.

I still like the Pirates films and Transporter is, well, Transporter.

I'm seriously conflicted on BD player to get now. I think I'd like the Pioneer ELITE the best, but I'm just not sure if it'll be worth the extra $400. We need more spec to compare!

The Transporter is fun. I would rather live without the others though.

Yeah, I'll be interested in reading more about this one and how it will compare to the upcoming Pioneer. Money not being an object I would definately chose the Pioneer, but $400 buys a lot of movies.

Yes it does. And, again, I'd rather give less money to BD if possible. I do want to go neutral, but I think I'd feel dirty giving so many clams to Sony's horse.

This player seems to just be an upgrade over the first-gen one. Since the DMP-BD10 did have analogs, I'd be surprised if they removed them for this incarnation.

How did the Panasonic stack up to the other BD players out there (Sony, PS3, etc.)?

I don't know if anyone on the forum actually bought a Panasonic. Maybe Derb did and returned it, but I don't remember reading that anyone owned one. If it has analog, it seems like it's a great buy. Five free movies, that you could possibly trade. It has dts-hdma capability, dolby true hd, plus bd-j support. Better specs would be nice though.

It says that the player is available now, but I can't find it anywhere online.

It might be available now in Japan.

The Panasonic got a lot of good reviews, most considering it the best BD player on the market. I know Robert Harris from HTF bought it.

Just read that there is no ethernet connector on this machine....

Guess there'll be no way for the "live" Blu-Rays to connect to the internet to do their thing?

As long as we can get firmware by disc, I genuinely don't care about the internet connectivity--for either format.

I passed on the Panasonic in favor of the Sony because the Sony outputs the original 1080p, where as the Panasonic does the common 1080p-1080i-1080p interlacing trick in the player. Odds are it wouldn't be noticable, but I'd still rather have the original source displayed, I'm paranoid that way.

This new one probably does the same thing.

One major selling point to me IS the ethernet connection. I wouldn't mind it if the player could hook into my network wirelessly as the Sony PS3 did, but eventually, they'll start releasing disks that will be able to access additional content online, I think it'd be wise to get a machine that will let you access the internet.

No internet connectivity=no sale!

There are other reasons to access the internet than to get firmware updates....

It is so rare that any feature besides commentaries pique my interest, so I doubt there'd be much online content that I'd want. This just feels like DVD-ROM again.

Yeah, I'm not crazy about it either. I say put all the content on the discs. If I wanted to download stuff I'd just buy my movies from a download service in the first place. Having to go online for content defeats the whole purpose of buying discs in the first place. But studios are convinced they need to give people an additional reason to buy into the new formats beyond just improved picture and sound. So we'll probably be stuck with this new download gimmick for some time.

The BD10A is exactly the same machine as the BD10 except it already comes pre-installed with the newest firmware. I'll try and find a link for it but that comes straight from the mouth of Robert at Value Electronics and other store owners. That being said, with the price drop and the free movies it sounds like a pretty good deal.

I was thinking about this last night and I think I might skip the 1K Pioneer (even though it is very pretty) and go with either this Panasonic or the $600 Sony. Even BD’s lead, there’s no guarantee that it’s going to win. I think it makes more sense to split the 1K between one of the aforementioned BD players and the XA2. Unless, however, I read that the Pioneer is tremendously better than these players and merits the extra $400.

Where is this thing? You'd think they'd time the player with the release of the free BDs bundled with it.

It's just a name change from the original Panasonic DMP-BD10 player, it's the same player, just with the new firmware.

Hmmm, at any rate it doesn't look like anyone has dropped the price yet. The Panasonic press release said it was available now, but I'm not seeing that. I wonder what's going on?

See, there's another advantage of the format war for all those who are bitching about it. If there wasn't a war there's no way hardware prices would be falling this quickly. So because of the war we've gotten better quality discs and cheaper players.

I agree, but these cheaper players actually need to come out.

The Sammy 1200 just scored a 96 in SD-DVD performance at Secrets:

Appears a BD player just checkmated the XA2.
