Samsung BD-P1200

Does anyone here own this player? Is there a reason I should get it/stay away from it?

Thanks.

(Update 05-11-07): We originally reported that the presence of HDMI 1.3 might mean that the BD-P1200 can pass the bitstream of Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD-Master soundtracks to forthcoming compatible receivers, but according to Samsung it cannot. The BD-P1200 has no support for those highest-resolution next-gen audio formats, so audiophiles should look at either the Panasonic DMP-BD10A or the PlayStation 3 for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD High Resolution soundtrack support.

Probably not a good choice. While it says it can't pass bitstream, there is a chance that it can pass PCM for those tracks and still deliver lossless sound. But I can't be sure about that. It does have that Reon chip though, I think.

Sigh. I've never had such a hard time turning to the dark side.

I have the Samsung P1000 and have had issues. My first player was returned because the "Blue Laser" was not reading many of my discs. It was exchanged and I have had firmware issues and have had upgrades. I really did not want to purchase Sony, but I almost feel like I should have waited and purchased a standalone Sony player. Samsung has been great in helping me with my issues, but I really feel the player is a lemon. Not sure if the P1200 is a better player. Probably is a better player now that the bugs are being worked out.

It has the best video quality of all the Blu-Ray players, but no decoding for nextgen audio codecs and no way to pass them via bitstream.

I returned 3 BD-P1000 Sammy's due to constant glitches. Maybe Sammy has improved sinse then. You could try it out, don't like, return it.

Everybody seems to have a restocking fee unless I can prove it's defective.

Hmm.. $600 = 33 HD DVDs from Amazon... Or an HP HD DVDROM drive for the computer + 25 HD DVDs. You could also get one of those snazzy Onkyo TrueHD/DTS-HDMA receivers + some movies for that price

And yeah, I'd watch out for the restocking fee. I've heard Best Buy and other retailers have changed their policy specifically for HD disc players - BD especially due to the high cost.

My first SAMSUNG P1000 player was from Amazon. They did not charge me a restocking fee and they paid me back in full. After I returned it to them I bought the same player at Circuit City. It is okay to watch films but if I had a chance to change my mind, I would probably choose a different player. I've only heard people having problems with the P1000 player. I'd search forums to see if there is customer satisfaction with the P1200. It may be a good player.

I was thinking about getting that Pioneer ELITE instead. I don't like the look of those Onkyos.

I like mine

Maybe this is natures way of telling you you should NOT get a Blu Ray player

Now is a particularly poor time to buy a Blu-Ray player IMO. Next-gen codec decoding is still not a standard feature, BD-Live is not a standard feature, BD-Java not finalized, etc. All of this SHOULD have been sorted out by now but if things go as planned, new models announced near the end of the year should fix this. On the other hand, one of the new Onkyo or Pioneer Elite receivers is virtually future proof and has all the new tech builtin.

Forever for films from studios not supporting HD DVD? Nah. If HD DVD is able to capitalize this XMAS with low player prices, studios will be forced to switch once the installed base is large enough.
