Sharp BD-HP205 Blu-ray Player

Quote:
Sharp Electronics has announced it will release its first Blu-ray disc player in time for the holiday season.

Dubbed the BD-HP205, thus far Sharp has released only preliminary specs for the deck, which is due by late fall.

Expect 1080p output capability at both 24fps and 60fps, plus in-board Dolby TrueHD decoding.

The player is also slated to fully support HDMI v1.3, and includes analog 5.1 outputs as well.

Sharp is also touting a new 'Quick Start' feature, which will load a disc mere seconds after being inserted into the tray. This is likely to be viewed as a welcome addition by early adopters, as currently load times on Blu-ray (and HD DVD) players tend to be frustratingly slow.

The manufacturer has not yet announced an exact street or pricing for the BD-HP205, but we'll keep you posted. Watch this space!

Sounds like this may be a player to wait and see about.

Now, if Sharp can do it, so can all the others...no excuses...

The real question is, does it support the full gamut of BD interactivity or will it be severely limited like 1st/2nd gen BD?

Notice the DTS-HD MA logo...

Looks a helluva lot like the XA2.

I did notice that. It would be cool if it is true. I do notice that it looks brighter in lettering than the other audio codecs, which makes me wonder if it is photoshopped. But I hope that it does have it.

The BD-UP5000 is by far the most promising BD standalone slated for this year IMO, if only because it guarantees compliance with the final BD specs.

Do you mean the Samsung BD-P1400?

http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/news...or_Release/759

This sounds like something that meets all of PH's needs...well, except for maybe the analog audio part. But he really needs to update that anyways.

Not a bad looking player.

I guess for legal reasons manufactures have to put those logos on equipment. But man they make the unit look cheap

The new Onkyo is a great receiver to be sure but the front of the receiver is plastered with HDMI, XM, DD, DTS, THX to name a few make the receiver and DVD players look like trash in my opinion.

My HK has the logos on top of the receiver in a kind of transparent tape. You can hardly notice them.

I like clean lines and a clean apperance on equipment, in case you haven't already guessed.

It's not a legal issue, it's for marketing. The theory is that it makes the player/reciever/whatever look more impressive because it has all these logos and thus all those features. If there was a logo for the kitchen sink they'd throw it on there too.

Wait for the Panasonic BD50. Which is actually a finished spec BD player.

I'm sick of waiting. First it was wait for the Panny BDwhatever, then the Sammy combo player, now it's wait for the new Sammy combo player and so on.

I'm getting something that plays HD movies with sound at some point in the next two weeks. I don't care about internet connectivity, PIP or ringtones, so bring on the obsolete players!

If you don't care about internet why not just get the BD30? Its also a great player.

I can get the Sharp for $360 shipped. The Panny would cost me around $450. Do you think there's a $100 difference between the two?

EDIT: It doesn't look like the Panasonic DMP-BD30K decodes THD or DTSMA. It's bitstream only. That doesn't do me much good with my current receiver.

He may be flogging the pony, but the headache trying to find a decent non-video game-based player is very real.
