Denon DVD-3800BDCI Blu-ray Player
Denon Announces Flagship DVD-3800BDCI Blu-ray Player
Denon Electronics today announced the introduction of its flagship Blu-ray player, the DVD-3800BDCI, for release this fall, which will include some of the most advanced features yet seen in a next-gen player. The DVD-3800BDCI (retail $2000) will include full 1080p output, as well as be the first Blu-ray player to hit the market with the Realta HQV video processor, which allows for advanced video clean-up of even the best high-def signals. The deck also includes decoding for all current high-resolution audio formats, including Dolby TrueHD, DTS HD Lossless Master Audio and uncompressed PCM, with output up to 7.1 channels. But perhaps most exciting of all for early adopters, the DVD-3800BDCI will be among the first Blu-ray players on the market to support BD-ROM Version 1.1, aka it will boast dual built-in audio/video decoders to take advantage of picture-in-picture content encoded on Blu-ray discs. That will allow the deck to playback In-Movie Experience-type features that have long been a mainstay on the rival HD DVD format. (Though there are currently no Blu-ray titles available that include picture-in-picture features, the major studios are expected to begin announcing discs with such content as players capable of accessing them begin to hit the market.) Denon has not announced an exact street date for the DVD-3800BDCI, aside from the fall timeframe. We'll keep you posted as further specs and release information is unveiled. Stay tuned! I think I just found my next blu-ray player. I'll have to wait for reviews of course, but this sounds like a winner at least on paper.
It'll have a hell of a lot better build quality than the average player. Lots of features too. Having the Realta in it adds to the cost as well. Assuming they live up to their rep, the player will be well worth the price.

Well, they screwed me.
The presumably cheaper DVD-2500BTCI doesn't decode any of the new codecs, but it can pass the signal to a receiver that does. I don't want to buy a new receiver and a BD player. ![]() Also I know about Denon's quality since I own a 2910, but dammit. Even $1,500 seems more acceptable. |

Strange that with all those features and the 1.1 spec, they still didn't include an ethernet jack. Not that I care, I hate this online content nonsense. But with all they do have it seems an odd omission.

This does seem impressive, though it is odd that there is no ethernet jack on it. I doubt it would have added that much cost, but it could have additional value. Unless bd only sees the ethernet access as a means for firmware updates.

Well that's what they'll have to do of course, or put it online to download. But with studios going all crazy with their interactive online content, it's surprising it's not included for future use. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before this online nonsense catches up with blu-ray like it has hd-dvd.

I sent off for a firmware update 6 weeks ago to Toshiba for my hd-a2 player. Never got the disc, but did get the firmware download and burned my own disc. Still, if I was dependent on Toshiba, I wouldn't be watching hd-dvd's right now.

Between this and your free discs I think you must have a black hole somewhere in your mail system. I get update discs from Toshiba regularly. They usually show up about two weeks after an update is posted for download.

If the HD-XA2 is not "high end" enough for you, Meridian will be releasing an HD DVD player later in the year; and, most consider Meridian a "higher end" company than Denon. And honestly, $2k for a Denon player that doesnt even have an ethernet jack when the HD-XA2 is $550? Man.

I hardly think so, 2 grand is far above what the majority of people will pay
the pricing for Blu Ray players is a joke, the lowest priced is still about twice what the low price for HD DVD players go for. |

They will come, on AVSFORUM it took 2-3 months for most.
As for the firmware update CD, the first one can take a month or two but after that they come about 2 weeks after the internet update is available. IMO you'd be best solving your network problems not only to get the firmware update but also so that you can use the internet features on HD DVDs.

Exactly, this really doesn't mean much in the scope of things. Who is going to buy a player for $2000 that has less features than a $550 XA2? If Denon relased a $249 BD player, then we'd have something to talk about.

That's good to know. I just wish they communicated better. I'm sure I'm entered in some email database. A simple email telling me they received my request and will ship in 8 weeks or something would be nice.
