Home Theater HiFi DVD player shoot-out

Ok, you can see the results here. HD DVD and Blu-Ray players are evaluated but only playing SD-DVDs and not HD content. HD content reviews will be conducted and posted later.

Looks like the Samsung Blu-Ray player is the best SD-DVD player of the current crop of HD content players, followed by the Toshiba HD-XA2. The PS3 basically sucks as a SD-DVD player as did the PS2.

Again, the HD players were evaluated playing SD-DVD content and NOT HD content. The HD content evaluations will come later on.

Enjoy!

Peace...

Is the Xbox 360 Add-on not on the list?

I don't think the HDAO was part of that particular test. You can read about the HDAO test here.

It faired better than the PS3 at SD-DVD playback.

Peace...

I'd agree with what they say about the BDP-S1. One of the reasons I went with that one is because it's passing the 1080p signal untouched, unlike the other Blu-ray players (except the Pioneer which uses part of the same design). But as a SD DVD player it sucks. It looks horrible compared to my A1, so I use that for SD play back. Hopefully when I upgrade to a gen three hd-dvd player or the Denon BD player, one of the two will still have good SD playback (the Denon should look great with the Realta in it).

Denon has announced a Blu-Ray player? When did that happen? Are they supporting Blu-Ray only or HD DVD as well?

Peace...

For now they are releasing only a Blu-ray player, but its price tag is going to be a pretty hefty $2k. At the Denon Line Show in NJ they hinted that they are not totally ruling out the idea of mfg an HD DVD player, but we'll have to wait and see on that one. Here's some pix of the upcoming player which should be out by Nov.

Interestingly, Amazon had preorders available for gen3 Toshiba players and there was no HD-XA3 equivalent. Maybe Toshiba is refraining from producing a "high end" gen3 player to leave the field open for Onkyo's upcoming "high end" HD DVD player?

Don't feel too bad, it's next to impossible to find anything now that the forum has been split all over the place for no good reason (hint, hint).

I knew someone would complain about you know what!

Now what's with the layer changes? Nearly 1 second for a layer change on a $800 player versus none on the Oppo at $580 LESS. And the nearly 2 seconds on the XA2?

For some reason that strikes me as odd.

I've yet to notice a layer change on my XA2.

Sometimes when I read these things I wonder if I really have a XA2, or maybe some futuristic XA10 or something? I haven't experienced any problems that I have read about.

That's just the nature of the net. Rarely to people rush on line to post, "hey, my player works perfectly!" It's the people who have problems that are more likely to take the time to post about them, so it tends to seem like there are a lot more problems than there are.

The A2/A20/XA2 all have layer change pauses with standard DVD, but its improtant to keep in mind that most HD DVDs have buffered seemless layer change transitions (read: 0 seconds). The hardware is in the box to have 0 second buffered DVD layer changes as well in the Toshiba players, but they haven't written the software to take advantage of it.
