I wonder why there are so many Blu Ray movies on that list

BTW, Electronics Expo who is currently offering the player for $226 (!) is a very reliable retailer in NJ that happens to sell on AMAZON.COM as well - I bought my HD-A1 from them.

I think they've closed the others down. Still, it's so good a deal, I wish I had waited now to buy my hd-a2. Well, I've enjoyed plenty of hd-dvds in the interim, and I had a good deal when I bought in, so I'm not too disappointed.

Although IMO, if anyone has waited this long, they might as well wait another 1.5 months and get the HD-A3 which should be signficantly faster than the HD-A2 for ~$250.

However, the ~$250 for the A3 does not include 8 free titles (about a $200 value)...definitely a consideration.

True. For myself the 8 free titles would be ebay'd anyway because I have most of them already... For someone starting their HD DVD collection that is certainly an excellent start, though, so it may be worth it for some to pull the trigger now.

Heck I considered buying the HDAO just for the movies and selling the drive on ebay which I would probably get about $140 for. Thats 8 (9 if you count king kong) for $40. Though, I do expect ebay to be flooded with these because of the deal.

Oh, it's an excellent value. Despite my wishing for the hd-a20, the hd-a2 has performed admirably. Yes, there is the cheapo disc tray, but the player has been flawless in its execution. The remote leaves more to be desired though. It feels really cheap. But other than that, no complaints.

I know the 5 free movie deal was a bargain when I bought into hd-dvd, plus if I bought the matrix trilogy, I got two other movies for free. The 8 free movies is even better, for a price that was lower than what I paid (the hd-a2 is now $240 on amazon). At least I avoided all the glitch problems others faced last year and early this year.

It appears they've cut the promo short early due to overwhelming demand.

It's too bad, though I guess giving away movies for free starts hurting after you give away too many.

But if demand is so high, well....isn't that a good thing for them?

You'd think it would be, but I'm sure accountants and actuaries are telling the hd-dvd prg that this is the time to stop the promo.

Or, create high demand, have supply stop, create high demand again but with less free movies. As time goes on, this could allow for more and more interest only to circle back as high demand. Short term goals for the long term, no?

Basically, I think you gotta get the players out there first, and free movies off and on with these specials 'maintains' interest and gets people to buy the player. I don't see this temporary withdrawal as a negative at all if played carefully.

Yeah, but I had almost convinced myself to buy the HDAO for the 8 movies and then sell just the drive on Ebay.

Well, you can still get the 5 free movies from Toshiba, but Amazon stopped kicking in the extra 3.

yeah, but those 5 suck cause you gotta pick one from each set, not just any 5, so I get stuck in a couple of cases taking flicks just because, not becasue I want them.

They were smart in that regard cause they new certain flicks would be in more demand abd others no one would want.

Well, they could just have stopped the offer altogether and you'd get none free...would that be better?

It's my understanding that Toshiba will be starting a "new" offer with their third gen players. Same type of deal where you buy a player and get five movies free, but the movies will be different for this "new" offer...supposedly the "new" offer will run from Late October into February. It might be worth it to wait and get a third gen player if that's the case.

Regardless of whether or not your picks suck Canada has been completely ignored with all of these "deals" when buying an HD player. The only one we have gotten so far is 3 hd-dvds in the box with your player and there is no choice. I wish I could choose 8 discs or at least 5 and still get a cheap player - it would make me more motivated to take the leap into HD. Canada - land of the ignored and shafted.

It appears that certain combinations (300 and Shaun of the Dead, 300 and Bourne Supremacy, etc) will net you 8 total titles instead of 7.

Either way, I've waited this long, I think I'll wait til next year after the 3rd gen players have been in the market awhile. My biggest "problem" is that I will need a player and a new receiver. No reason to only jump in half way.
