Sony unveils new Blu-ray recorders

Blu-ray recorders that can record bd-50 discs are coming out in Japan. Hopefully they come to the states soon.

These have been coming out in Japan for a while on both formats AFAIK (standalone HD/BD recorders with large hard drives) however they never seem to make it over to the US. Perhaps they feel the DVR market already is monopolized by the cable companies and hence an expensive unit like these will never sell when you can rent a DVR for a meager $15/mo from your local cable provider.

Actually, it's because broadcasters here are throwing all kinds of roadblocks in their way and trying to keep digital recorders from becoming common place. They're still fighting over the whole broadcast flag issue, so I suspect no manufacturer wants to release a HD recorder only to have it suddenly not comply with US law if the last court ruling is overturned on appeal.
