Sharp to offer BD burner w/1TB storage

For about $2600US, you too can have a BD burner with a TB of HDD storage.Interesting. I wonder what kind of tuner ( ATSC or NTSC ) or inputs this has for importing HD content.

It's a Japan-only model, as HD recorders like that are a no-no in this country. Sharp has 3 other recorders just like that one (smaller or no hard drives, otherwise identical), and Panasonic has a couple of them out as well.
If anyone recalls, the very first product to bear the BD logo was a Sony standalone recorder, which used cartridges, and is now completely incompatible with the current format.

Better off just attaching a 1-terrabyte external eSata drive to your current Scientific Atlanta HD DVR box (assuming that is the cableco box you use, cuz all the scientific atlantas have eSata ports) or computer if you plan to use it as a media server. Would cost you less then $400 altogther:

1TB Esata

Some examples of external eSATA HD closures that would work with the Scientific Atlanta DVR boxes or as a media server hooked up to a PC:

No cable box for me. Watching Animal Plannet HD on DirecTV HD DVR. I know it has USB ports, but no eSATA. Someone I was talking to said I could run a USB cable to my HTPC and send content to it, but I haven't figured out how.

Now it looks like Matsushita (Panasonic) is getting into the act, too.

I'm not sure if people are aware, but on the HD DVD side Toshiba has had one of these over in Japan since last year:

http://www.engadget.com/2006/06/22/t...with-1tb-disk/

The current model is the RD-A2 and it is based on the HD-A2 2nd gen design, similar otherwise in specs to the first gen RD-A1 though. Like the other models in this thread, it only was released in Japan never to see the light of day in the US.

I was under the impression that the Toshiba was never released (there were at least 3 prototypes shown off by Toshiba over the last 2 years). The 1x recorder could not sustain MPEG-2 recording in real-time for long durations, without creating serious errors. The current HD-DVD burners in Toshiba's laptops exhibit the same problems, so I don't think they've fixed the problem.
