The Greater of Several Evils
I am so tired of waiting for fabled dual-format players and/or a semi-future proof BD standalone. Now that the Samsung models have been either cancelled or pushed to December, I’m really considering just buying a Sony S300, the Sharp BD-HP20 or the Panasonic DMP-BD10A.
So, I come to you, my fellow EA’s and HD fence-sitters. Help me choose an in the meantime BD player. Here are my specs and stipulations: 1. Currently, my projector is 720p, but, honestly, that fine with me and I’m in no hurry for 1080p. 2. I don’t have a HDMI receiver, but I will in the next few months. So, I’m stuck with analogs for the time being. Please feel free to suggest a player that I may have overlooked (except then PS3). ![]()

December is only two months away. You can't wait that long?
I have the BDP-S1 and it's been reliable for me. A bit slow, especially in the java department, but otherwise stable. The BDP-S300 is more or less the same player. |

Yeah, you might as well wait. You shouldn't buy any of those players if you aren't going to be happy with them in two months or so.

Was that ad with the baby an actual ad? If so, it was genius.

I doubt that you'd be happy with a stop-gap player.
Seriously, just get the PS3...it's the most future-proof of the players out right now. Seems irrational to discount it due to the form factor and the fact that it plays games. It really is a great machine.

In all seriousness though, of all the Blu-Ray players on the market the PS3 is by far the most future proofed and value oriented (you can use it as a full-on media client and it'll run Linux too!). It just happens to be play games.

I implore you to wait. Why spend the money now? If you are willing to through out the future proofing yourself, then wait til Christmas where those obsolete players will actually drop in price. Or, buy the sony, watch your movies for a month and then return and wait another month for Christmastime.

So far my experience with the Samsung BDP-1400 with the updated firmware to output DTS-HDMA is my favorite player on the market. I like the Panasonic, and find it to be equal to the Samsung, except for the lack of DTS-HDMA. The Sony player is a cheap disappointment, as the Samsung and Panasonic players seem to be of a much better build quality.

The mystery of why people discount the PS3 has suddenly become so clear. Ignorance is Bliss

If I were to get a player now, I would go with these three in this order:
1. Samsung BDP-1400 2. Panansonic DMP-BD10A 3. Sony S300 Like a few have stated, with the Sammy, you'll get TrueHD and DTS-HD right out of the box, well, if you get the latest firmware update. I think the Panny is capable of this also, at least TrueHD, but not quite sure about DTS-HD. The Sammy also looks alot nicer than the Panny. I can't speak for the Sharp as I really don't like that brand and haven't been following up on it. I was going to get the Panny awhile back, but they were hard to find back then and I also didn't really care the looks, so I decided to hold off and wait for the sammy. So now the sammy is on my to get list, but when that happens, I don't know. It all depends on if/when the new Onkyo 805 happens.

1. I don't play games in my HT, so I'd have to move it every time I wanted to use that "feature." 2. No analogs. 3. I'd prefer it come with a remote control. 4. It's a toy and I'm an elitist prick.

I don't even know what that means. I can handle the $25 since I'm saving so much in the first place. I don't think you're a prick... and the PS3 is the most solid game and movie player this generation with some awesome tech, so it's far from a toy (like the Wii you bought)... the rest ok. |

The Panasonic has been discontinued, to be replaced with the DMP-BD20. I'll check to see when it should be in stock at work for you, if you like. If you can find a BD-10A, make sure you don't pay retail...

I still say get the PS3. DTS-HD is suppose to added in a firmware update soon and you have already mentioned you will be purchasing a HDMI receiver in a few months. I have been without a HDMI receiver as well but the PS3 has still been great with the 2.0 PCM tracks (hoping to have a HDMI receiver maybe this weekend) Plus you said
