Planning The Perfect Murder!

Actually, I just need some opinions on my new "HD Plan."

To properly get my HD on, I’m going to need the following:

1. Blu-ray player
2. HDMI receiver
3. Newer HD DVD player.

My original plan was to wait for the Samsung dual-format player and then get a new receiver to compliment the new sound formats. However, spending $1000 (depending on final pricing) on the Sammy would mean a longer wait for the receiver. So, here’s what I’m thinking.

I could get one of the current BD players for $499 or so and the Onkyo 705 for $699. Then, after the Sammy player has been out for a while, reviewed, lowered in price, and hopefully de-bugged, I could replace my HD-A1 HD DVD player and the S300 BD player with the one dual-format unit.

What so you think? Is that squirrel-buttons nuts?

I’m stuck in my head, people! I need perspective!

All HD DVD and no Blu-ray makes Pirate a dull boy!

I'm pretty sure The Queen and Volver have been crying out to you.

Your plan doesn't sound too bad. I really don't think that the extras are that big a deal until you're ready for the move to the Samsung. You can watch them later. And having the hdmi receiver will be awesome too.

You could always buy a PS3

Kidding aside. Just wondering since it doesn't work for Cnd buyers. Did the 10% Off High Def products include the players as well. Never shows me if i can cause they don't ship electronics to Canada.

Anyways i guess this is what i would do if Amazon.com is your place to shop

Blu-Ray Player - Samsung BD-1400 for $406 (DTS-HD supported i believe)
HD-DVD Player - HD-A35 $406 (Bitstream TrueHD tracks)
OR
HD-DVD Player - HD-A3 Black Friday deal (no bitstream TrueHD but still TrueHD PCM)
Onkyo 705 - $610

Slight bit over or dead on if the 10% High Def player sis included on Amazon.com

Why not get the Panasonic DMP-DB30? It'll be on sale for around $400 when it comes out in a few weeks.

EDIT: it's $450 at Circuit City with a 10 percent off code, and available today.

Dude, the Samsung is going to be $799 when it comes out in December - BB leaked the price out by accident. That would be much smarter, nicer looking, and more worthwhile than spending $500 on a BD player and $400 on a HD DVD player. Patttience.

What Ruined said, or if you insist on BD now, the PS3 is going for $399 at BB these days, it's a rock solid player.

I didn't see that pice. Hmmm. Crap, I thought my plan was so good.

OK, so I guess I'll get the receiver next and then get the Sammy in Dec.

Murder planned!

Am I missing a joke here? I own both those titles, and they are fine films. Better than mindless crap like Transformers for sure.

There's no joke. I have been waiting to watch my copy of The Queen and to buy Volver (with white subs) forever! And it's killing me! Ganthc knows my pain, thus the comment.

I think us EAs deserve slipcover replacements from Universal for those horrid silver spined ones!

Maybe we should start some sort of good film support group here, where people send in their copies of crappy films to be destroyed like Transformers and The Matrix and get back good films in exchange. I nominate Derb to run it since he seems to buy multiple copies of everything anyway.

If films like Volver & The Queen turn you on, than maybe high-def isn't the best suitable choice to buy HD. Stick to SD.

& PH OPEN them BDs up man. You might have a couple which have scratch marks, puncture marks, brown speckles, god knows what. I wouldn't buy a copy of a film & keep it shrink wrapped unless you have a lifetime warranty of purchase.

I fail to see why a film shouldn't be viewed in HD just because it doesn't have a lot of explosions or action sequences. There is such a thing as cinematography you know.

I forgot you had "Closer" too. You'll enjoy that one as well when you see it. PH, you should take advantage of the bogo sale going on right now. Might as well pick up some low priced movies since you know for sure that you're getting a bd player.
