My MI:3 HD DVD got owned by my HDTV
Going back to this thread:
http://forums.dvdfile.com/showthread.php?t=60879 We can see that Mission Impossible 3 HD DVD - at the time being watched on a Sony 57" 1080i CRT HDTV w/ Toshiba HD-A1 HD DVD player - completely destroyed my HDTV with moire, line twitter, and overall general crap appearance on the stairs sequence in that movie. This sequence can be seen at the very beginning of chapter 8 of the HD DVD. Happy to report that my new Sony KDS-60A3000 @ 120hz being fed 1080p24 from my Toshiba HD-A35 passes the test like a champ - no moire, line twitter, or anything. I'm pretty damn excited considering a ton of HD setups flunk this test. Awesome combo for sure!

ya, that stairs scene is a nightmare to reproduce. I noticed a little bit of an issue on my Sony LCD/Toshiba A1 when I first watched the movie, but it was nothing that concerned me. I have since done some fine calibration of my video settings and it still does not look perfect, but its better than before and the shot is over in 2 seconds anyways.
As mentioned in the other thread, I also did see some fuglys on Ethan's car as he pulled up to the 7-11, but its over in a second and its only noticeable if you know its there, and no one but me would see it, so I'm not concerned. Its good to know that this is a problem scene. I am going to use the pan down the stairs as a system test from now on. |

Better to be product smart than brand stupid
![]() Its not Sony products I hate, its a lot of their corporate decisions (such as on DRM - BD+ as well as the CD rootkit fiasco) as well as certain decisions they've made in the highdef market. Of course, my hate for those decisions will bleed into the products that showcase the technology featuring them ![]() Sony makes awesome TVs and decent optical players. Receivers/audio products, OTOH, they generally suck. And they also have a history of creating stupid format wars with their proprietary-backed formats. While I do have much enthusiasm, it is for the products I have that enthusiasm, not the specific companies that make them. Microsoft happens to make a lot of awesome products so people associate me with MS, but not everything they make is awesome. I'd easily take a Logitech mouse/trackball or webcam over a Microsoft-equivalent. In terms of keyboards and software though, they are hard to beat. You will not see me buying crappy products simply to get all one brand I like - however many do this. People will go and buy all the same brand components so they look nice and match; looks are all well and good, but I'd rather have a technically superior rig than an inferior one that looks nicer. Just like my computer, my HT is a mix of what I consider top notch products-- Sony TV, Toshiba HD DVD, Onkyo/Integra Preamp, Parasound Power Amp, PSB Speakers, Panamax Surge Protectors (would get Tripp Lite double conversion UPS if I could afford the $1k+ high wattage ones I'd need), and Velodyne sub. I don't think I have any two products of the same brand from different classes of electronics. But what I do have are all best of breed in their class from what I could afford when I bought them IMO. And I will gladly argue why I feel they are so in forums like this both for educational and entertainment purposes! ![]()
