Which BD Player Currently Offers The Best SD Playback?

Besides the PS3, which BD player has the best SD-DVD playback (upconverted or otherwise)?

Probably the Sammy 1400 with the Reon.

Though I'm not terribly impressed with the PS3's SD ability...

Does the 1400 have 5.1 analogs?

I've been reading a bit too many freezeup reports of this unit on AVSFORUM. I know the Reon generates a lot of heat, perhaps the chassis ventilation is not adequate?

Anyway pirate, why not just buy one of the Onkyo receivers with Reon and then you have the flexibility to buy any BD player you want - just send the Onkyo 1080i. That will kill two birds with one stone.

However, I still think you should wait for the BD-UP5000. Its by far the best solution in this case. I mean, you've waited this long... You can't wait another month? Its not worth the instant gratification when you'd likely be much more satisfied with the BD-UP5000 when it comes out. In fact, if you pull the trigger now and have two seperate units you'll probably be pissed you didn't wait when the UP5000 is released.

According to Amazon, I wouldn’t get the UP5000 until mid January. I’m really tired of waiting, and my Pioneer DVD player has been quirky of late, so I’m considering dropping the $350 on a in the meantime BD player and then upgrading to the UP5000 in February or March.

I will not buy a PS3 until I absolutely have to (i.e., God of War III).

Consider it good preparation.

Yeah just buy a PS3 now and be ready for the God of War III game (i know i can't wait) No sense in paying money for a Blu-ray player now and then upgrading again in Feb/March to the BD-UP5000 player. Only to buy a great Blu-ray player/ok Game System again later in Nov (which is being rumoured for the release date of GoW III) So save your money get a PS3 now and enjoy your Blu-ray movies just sitting up there on the shelf.

It's 12/1 already PH. You are going to spend $350 this week because you cant wait 30-40 more days for the player you really want and then spend another $750 for that player?

You are laying out around $1100 dollars because you cant wait 40 days to spend only ~$750?

I really don't understand you sometimes. No offense dude, it's just...I dunno.

Is renting a PS3 a possibility? Not sure if Blockbuster rents the console, but if they do, I'd consider that for a few nights just to get your BR fix in while waiting for mid Jan' to come around.

Pirate, how about the LG BH200? It is out, full HD DVD/HDi support, and it supports BD1.1. Outputs nextgen bitstream and the like. $799 at Crutchfield.com. Here is some owner reviews:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=926099

Of course, it is hard to find, but it is out there. It also does not look to be as good as the BD-UP5000, but it is still way smarter than buying a standalone BD player at this point when you want a combo player in the end.

The S300 is alright but loading times can be brutal. Its Sorny's format, so I'd stick to a Sony just like there are not plenty of options for CE HD DVD players.

No, I’m thinking of laying down $350 now and then $800 - $900 for the new receiver, and then buying the UP5000 when I have the money--which will probably be March or so.

Make sense now?

Nope. Pirates got mad skills, you know, like nunchuku skills, bow hunting skills, computer hacking skills... employers only want employees who have great skills.

Trust me, I don’t make that much. I don’t buy nice clothes or good food (including cigarettes and the drink), so I can afford to throw money at components.

No.

What happens to the $350 spent to hold you over for 40 days had you simply waited for the UP5000 (delivered mid Jan you said)?

Amazon says that they'll be shipping in mid Jan. I won't have the money until after that if I buy a receiver, so that means waiting until March or so for the UP5000. That's why I'm considering a $350 player now. I can always sell it later and make back a $100 or so.

So don't buy the receiver and get the UP5000 in January. Avoiding a whole month's wait is not worth wasting $200. Plus you could give us all a nice review of the player in January which I'm sure many would like.

From your comments it seems you are not happy with your receiver selection you'd buy as a long-term choice either. So you'd be wasting money there, too. Wait for the Up5000, then wait until you can afford the receiver you will be happy with for a long time instead of blowing money on bandaids.

So we have this:

350 (bandaid player) + 750 (avr) + 750 (UP5000) = $1850 and it's all spent by late March which is less than 4 months away.

3 cool upgrades in 4 months. Or is it? Nope, it's 2 upgrades with the hassle of selling off a $350 unit for $100. Losing $200 bucks in less than 4 months.

Or, waiting 40 days. Get the unit you WANT (750) and then wait till March for the avr which could very well be less than 750 by then, lets say..650? So what does this path cost? Around $1400 probably.

1850 - 1400 = $450 for a wee bit of patience. And that $450 could go towards you know what my friend.

I'll leave ya be now.

So, save $450 now and spend $1015 later.

You should be able to compensate for the bass differences in the HD-A3 decoder setup. Just make sure crossover is 120hz, all speakers large, subwoofer on, all channels except LFE -10db. Or, if you have small speakers enable the bass management by setting speakers to small and set all the speakers except sub to -12db and decrease your sub level by -3db on receiver side or the sub itself.

BD-UP5000 in january
TX-NR705 in march
SPL-1200R in august

done deal.

P.S. - the Panasonic Profile 1.1 player, in additional to normal value loss, will further drop in value by March because Sony will have a profile 1.2 BD player out by then.

Same deal, set all channels to -12db in decoder setup, sub to 0db. That will regain your bass.

Why not just get the 875 with the Reon while you're at
