Ps3
OK, I am about to completely fuck up my living room. Right now I have a 26" low-def tv with a gamecube and dvd/vcr hooked up to it. I want better. I want HD and I want a new gaming console, so my mind has been spending time thinking of the PS3 as of late. I have a few questions before I take the plunge. I had a hard time finding any reviews of the BR experience on the PS3. Is it just as good as a BR player or does it fall short?
Also, does the PS3 upconvert standard DVDs to HD levels or would I have to get a separate upconverting dvd player for that? Also, I am thinking of upgrading the TV as well. I sit about 10 ft from the screen and am wondering what size and quality is needed for such a situation. Any suggestions on good HDTVs out there? Thanks!! |

The PS3 is an awesome Blu Ray player. I own tons of movies, and haven't encountered a single skip or error yet. It already outputs 1080p24 and soon will have DTS-MA decoding. Plus you'll find no compatability issues with certain titles that you may on various set top players. Yes it also upscales standard def DVDs as well. The one thing I can't comment on is it's gaming capabilities lol, haven't played one yet.
As for a TV, at 10ft back even a 50in would be no problem. I sit 12ft back from a 147in screen to give perspective.

The PS3 is a good all-in-one unit. But I'd hold off until you actually have the HDTV ready to go.
For HDTVs, the Sony KDS-60A3000 I picked up recently has been fantastic, so I'd recommend that. Lastly, I'd say to wait until January 2008 CES before doing anything. A lot of new hardware including laser-based HDTVs may be announced that you may want instead of the current models. Also, I'd advise as the best player to go with right now if you want to "play it safe" is the Samsung BD-UP5000 since that will play both hidef formats and has the fantastic Reon DVD upscaler that clearly beats out the DVD upscaling capabilities of the PS3 and cheaper standalones.

This may sound silly, but what does the PS3's TrueHD, DTS-HD, etc. sound like via coax? I know I'd only be getting the core, but does it sound decent—comparable to a good SD-DVD player?

A friend just got a PS3, so I'll be borrowing it shortly to see what all this Blu fuss is about.
Since thats the way things seem to be going and the PS3 is supposedly the greatest blu ray player ever, I'm going to have to swallow my HD pride and see what its like over on the dark side.
