Sony to exit RPTV market

According to TWICE Sony is ending it's production of RPTVs to focus on LCDs. That means no more SXRD

Quote:
Sony will exit the rear projection TV category to focus on flat-panel LCD TV after current inventories of its 3LCD- and SXRD-based products are exhausted, a company spokesman confirmed.

“We are moving our resources more toward LCD TV, because that’s what people really want,” a Sony spokesman said, confirming a published report.
So, get them while you can...

Pioneer left that market years ago and as much as I am disappointed in that move, it has proven to be a good one. They put all that great R&D and have arguably the best panels on the market. Guess we will see if it works as well for Sony. My concern is if this is indicitive of a trend away from all CEs. Unless panels drop even more, large screen TVs will be a thing only the rich.

Well, I might have to buy a new TV now and take advantage of the sell off of inventory. I have been eyeing Ruined's TV. I can only imagine how that would look.

Ruined, how did you transport the TV, or did you have it delivered?

I don't know about that. People could benefit from economies of scale.

The way of the future.

Can't wait for digital broadcasts so my vintage B&W 1960s set that still works is totally obsolete, unless I hook up a VCR to it.

I guess that is the point I was trying to make earlier. Economies of scale didn't take the bottom out of the current flat panel markte, last Christmass did The thing is, I don't know if large LCD TVs can be made at an affordable level. The panel is the big expense with LCD. The larger the panel, almost exponentialy, the higher the price. I hope you are right, and in a couple years, I can snag a 65" LCD for around 2Gs, but, I don't see that happening.

Sure am glad I got my 70XBR2 when I did. I wonder for how long they will have replacement lamps available for them? Just to be safe I should probably get an extra one. My TV came with a spare lamp but it never hurts to have another.

Bummer that Sony is dropping their SXRD lines. I was ever so curious as to what their 70XBR5 would have been like. Looks like we'll never know.

Sony should than try SED tech of their own if they wish to compete in the LCD only market. SXRD, Lcos tech is awesome & blacks never looked as good as CRT on another LCD based display.

Disappointing news to me...I'm not a huge fan of either flat panel technology at this point and Sony was putting out some great RPTV's. Seems like the mass market would rather have form factor over quality...but that's to be expected I suppose. Hopefully there will still be manufacturer's that realize there is a market for reasonably sized RPTV's that produce a great quality picture.

Just got my 60a3000 a few weeks ago and I LOVE IT Too bad they are gonna stop. Hopefully not all manufactures do this until flat panels drop to the same price for the same size.
