40" LCDs Oh my!

It's not like I haven't seen this posted 100 times, but I'm going to start my own thread anyway.

I've been looking at 40" LCD HDTVs and struggling to purchase one with the right balance of features and price.

I don't want to spend over $1700 (Amazon's discounts rock).

I've been considering:

Samsung 4071F
Samsung 4065F
Sony Bravia KDL-40W3000

and similarly priced/performance LCDs.

I need something that'll work well for HD DVD (I'd like to do 1080p/24), Xbox 360, and my PC.

Any opinions?

Looks like this one will do what you want.

Didn't see anything about 120Hz

I hear a lot of praise for Sony LCDs, so this may be the best bet, unless you can get the Samsung for a LOT less.

I have installed a lot of both the Sony and Samsung sets lately. Today I did a 32" Panasonic. I'll get to see it fired up when we get the rack fininshed tomorrow. I can say the Sony and Samsung look absolutely fantastic. I am leaning toward the Samsung for a Bedroom TV next spring ( Unless my better half gets her wish and we move )

My biggest concern was whether or not 120Hz on the Samsung set will do 5:5 pulldown correctly. I had read (somewhere) that it didn't run quite right at 120Hz and people had been turning that feature off.

I'm pretty unclear how/when the 120Hz is used on the Samsung sets. All the time? Part of the time? User defineable?

You might want to compare 720P and 1080P with your own eyes...at 40" there might be absolutely no difference to you in picture quality (depending on your eyes and your seating distance)...once you get to the 50" range is where a bigger difference becomes more apparent. Your comparison might save you a few bucks if that's any importance.

40" isn't really big enough for the 1080P to really be necessary, but you could get a Sammy DLP at 50 to 56 inches for that money (if you are not set on LCD and you have the room)

It's definitely going to be an LCD and wall mounted.

I say a Sharp Aquos in the Best Buy ad this weekend for $1799-$300. It was a 42". So $1499 for a 42" LCD.

The Sammy 4071 is a beautiful set. The 120hz thing is user definable, you can set it to high, medium and low. Personally I think it's best with it off, as the feature introduces some nasty motion artifacts(I have a theory that it might be better if the set is being fed by a player outputting 1080p24). Even with the feature off, I see no pixelization, and the contrast ratio makes for an excellent black level. If I were buying a tiny plat panel( ), I'd have no other.

Just bought a Sammy 4069 (like the 4071 but with a matte screen) and it is awesome. Got it from Frys.com for 1399.00. It was down to 1299.00 just a couple days ago.

What makes the 4071F worth an extra $100?

It has a glossy screen, giving it somewhat better contrast ratio (25K vs. 20K for the 4069). The case is a bit different. Otherwise, they are the same TV.

I've got to have a bigger screen than 40"!

Remember, 40" widescreen is the equivalent of about 32" standard 4:3 TV in regards to distance to screen viewing comfort and image size.

In other words, a 1.33:1 'fullscreen' film on a 40" widescreen, if using sidebars without a stretch option, will be approx 32" diagonally.

To quickly figure a widescreen to standard equivalency, just multiply the widescreen diagonal measure by 0.8174, or to go standard to widescreen equivalency, multiply the standard diagonal measure by 1.223

This won't be my main viewing screen, it'll be mostly for the kids and my work outs. It's got to be wall mountable and fit in the corner.

Still, I don't want a piece of junk.

Hello, did you mean the 4065f was for 1299? As of right now, the 4069 is going for 1599 on frys.com - I don't think I've seen it under 1500.

I meant the LN-T4069F. I bought it for $1399. The day after it arrived Frys lowered the price by $100. But that wa at XMas time when deals were plenty.

Amazon often has good deals too, and prices can vary wildly day to day.
