Sony KDS-60A3000 Owners Settings Thread

Hey, was just wondering what settings people have tried on this set and settled on, as it has so many different options. I know quite a few people on this board have this specific HDTV

So let's here what you've set yours at! 55A3000/50A3000 and XBR4/XBR5 owners chime in too!

Here are mine right now:

edit: back to min iris, it just looks better than when iris is enabled.

Hey Ruined, I just bought this TV, and I guess I need to ask you about something. One of the weird things it does is HD tv shows and movies almost look like they have pan & scan on them. It is actually very distracting at times as the screen shifts strangely. Is that Cinemotion in action? If so, then I need to turn that off. I am not sure if I will try your settings or some I've seen on AVS. I'll get back to you when I've seen things with your settings and theirs.

Yeah, give my settings a go. As for your problem, could you explain a little better what you mean? Pan & Scan implies that the picture is zoomed and sides chopped off, but then you mention some type of motion artifacting.

Also let me know sources and framerates/resolutions you are sending to the TV.

When I refer to pan and scan, I mean the shifting that happens in pan & scan movies so that you can see what would be in a wide screen view. For example, there are two people talking to each other. In widescreen, you see both of them on the screen. In p&s, it does what you say zooms and crops, but then in some movies it will shift the view so you see the other person. It is this eerie digital movement that allows you to see the other person. Essentially it's the panning of the view that would not be necessary if it was in widescreen view.

My sources are an hdmi cable from my Sony receiver to the TV. My frameratees/resolutions are the default settings from the TV which I haven't adjusted yet. I did adjust the setting from Vivid to Movie because the brightness of vivid was too much.

I can give you more info when I try out your settings and see if it solves the problems. Thanks for you help!

Yeah, give my settings a shot. My guess is the artificial-ness of the motion enhancer is creeping you out.

That happened to me too. I know exactly what you're talking about. Turn that cinemotion junk off. Cant stand that feature. Also, that motion enchancer, doesnt do crap but annoy me.

If you have the movie layer cake, pop in the disc and at the very beginning with the FCUK bottles and every label should be readable, and no flickering on the bottles while the camera pans across. With Cinemotion turned on I couldnt read crap. Motion nhancer made people seem like they were in fast forward when walking.

You are exactly right my friend. Once I did your settings, I stopped noticing the panning issue.

However, the settings I tried from you still didn't seem right. So I tried one from the AVS thread on settings to see if I could get a better fit. This one seemed a bit better, though I modified the sharpness...

This one seemed to be pretty good. I might try a few more, especially with a blu-ray disc or hd-dvd movie. Currently I have tried this with just HD TV programming. The settings I have are pretty damn good. The blacks are so nice and inky. I am pretty happy with my purchase so far.

I'll give the Auto2 iris a shot myself. I tried experimenting with the various constant iris settings and I found with rich hidef sources such as XBOX 360 or HD DVD/BD over time there were scenes that were way too intense (to the point of being painful at times). I didn't try any of the Auto iris settings because I've had bad experience with auto-adjusting contrast in the past... Most sets I try it on, it becomes very noticable that the picture is auto adjusting to the content. Its also difficult to reach ISF color standards because the iris essentially pumps the color/whites when there is little white onscreen.

But it is true that with this set, like any LCD, if you don't use the iris the blacks will not appear as dark. So far from playing around over time I preferred the less intense look of the iris disabled despite the appearance of lesser blacks, but like I said I'll give auto2 a shot.

I have a question for Ruined or any else for that matter.

I bought the Sony KDS-60A3000 two weeks ago and it is awesome. I notice that the voices do not sync well. I know this a problem with some HDTV hooked through HDMI. Here is how I have everything hooked up.

Toshiba HD-30 - HDMI to Sony TV
PS3 - HDMI to Sony TV
Direct TV - HDMI to Sony TV

Sony TV - optical cable to my receiver

Receiver
Yamaha - HT-5860

Right now I have center channel on the floor because I am waiting to build a shelf on the wall for it.

The Direct TV is where I notice the largest voice sync problem and it is noticable on the Toshiba and PS3 as well.

Is there a way to remedy this? Thanks!

Hmm, strange - I never had that sync problem and I had the Toshiba HD-A35 hooked up to the Sony KDS-60A3000 for some time, checking out the TV speakers. Check to see if there is a firmware upgrade for the TV or HD DVD player. Also, try a different HDMI cable.

One way to remedy it is by adjusting delay times in the receiver, though obviously this won't help if you are trying to use the TV speakers.

BTW, ganthc, I tried out your settings. I felt they worked well for video games (and isn't too far off from how I had the TV set when I first got it), but for movies I prefer the original settings I have posted above - they just seem a lot more film-like and natural to me. The ones you are going with just seemed to be running a bit too hot for me.

Perhaps...I did make a few adjustments here and there. All I know is that LOST: Season 3 looks absolutely beautiful. OMG, it's incredible how detailed and rich the picture is. I just breezed through 5 episodes and loved every scene.

I delayed the sound with my receiver 18ms and it is lined up pretty well right now, but it is still a little off. Thanks for your help.
