Does the PS3 upconvert dvds?

It does...and I'm not that impressed with its performance in this regard actually.

With the latest firmware I've heard its quite good, but the quality can't match current standalones with the Reon video processor chip (i.e. Samsung BD-UP5000, Onkyo DV-HD805.)

If you have one of the new Onkyo receivers with Reon HQV builtin, you'd get best quality from the PS3 by running it 1080i to the Reon for deinterlacing.

Thanks. I just got a PS3 the other day and did the latest firmware update. I put in Heartbreak Kid and I thought it looked pretty remarkable for a sd dvd. But I hadn't played it in my other dvd player.
