Aussie HD DVD FW = Region Free SD DVDs?

So I'm over at HTF (not a member) and run across this in an old thread:

Quote:
Supposedly one can upgrade some HD DVD players with Australian firmware versions that will remove SD DVD region restrictions from the player. Reading various Internet forums would lead me to believe this can be applied to at least some European models as well as Australian.
Anyone heard any more about this?

This would be a first, but would make me stand up and take notice Having a region free DVD and HD DVD player would make me QUITE happy!

Same here! If the HD-DVD player could be region free, bye bye Oppo!
