My HD-A1 HDMI connection Dead?

Well i was watching Harry Potter: OoTP yesturday on my system to see how my new speakers were doing for some key scenes. Today i thought i would see how they would do for Transformers. So i went to play my disc and i got in a box [No Signal Detected] and sure enough the same was on my receiver. I thought that it was my Onkyo that went or the cord had come loose from my brother fooling around with the game systems. Nope at was good and tight. Next i checked the menu on the receiver and all was set correctly. I tried the HDMI ports and both worked fine when i ran them with my PS3. So the last thing i thought was that the HDMI cable had gone bad (how i don't know but thought i would try) Sure enough the HDMI worked fine with my HD-DVR. So after all this i think my HD-A1 player is in need of repair or replacing (thankfully i have a service plan on the player taken out) So i'm thinking i will be HD-DVD playerless for a few weeks now or is there something i might of missed?

Did you try running the HD-DVD player directly to the display bypassing the receiver? That way you can make sure nothing funky got changed in the receiver. Is it possible you might have accidently hit the button that changes the output from hdmi to component? Did you try hooking up the player with component cables and seeing if you get an image that way? Lots of things to check before declaring the player dead.

Receiver was still set to HDMI out for all inputs. Have my Wii with component and PS3 with HDMI. No problems with either picture going through the receiver to my HDTV. HD-DVD player set on DVD with HDMI Input 1 set. Again i tried swapping the HDMI cable out with my PS3 and DVR and both were working fine for sound and picture.

Even if the Component cables were giving me picture i need my HDMI for the high def sound and not even that was coming out when going through the receiver. (sure i coud go analog again but its a mess)

As I said before, plug the HD-DVD player directly into the display and see what happens. The PS3 and A1 handle hdmi handshaking in different ways (and aren't even the same revision), so just because the PS3 works doesn't mean that's not where the problem is.

I concur

If this does not work, its time to get that PRP for a new HD DVD player going.

Ok i tried the direct connection to my HDTV and sure enough NOTHING. I put in a disc and got nothing and i tried the setup menu and nothing. So here i am with a dead HDMI port or so i thought. After getting nothing on screen i just took the remote and slid my fingers pressing down on all of them buttons and after my 2nd or 3rd time going up and down the remote the setup menu appeared. Which ever combo or single button did it i don't know, but it appears to be working again.

Could one button on the remote really do that to me or do you think there is still some concern over the player.

If your TV is a really old one that does not accept 720p, there is a button on the HD-A1 remote that switches between 720p/1080i. There is also one that switches between component and HDMI output IIRC. Both of these buttons were taken off the HD-A2/A3 remote AFAIK.

Try a straight connection.

Toggle the A1's resolution button.

Once ya get picture, hook back up to receiver.

No picture, buy a new HDMI cable.

yeah, look for a button on the remote that is labled video, IIRC. That will switch the output from component to HDMI.

Sad thing is, I found that non anamorphic DVDs out of my HD-D1 have to be sent out at 480P, or I can't strech the image on my Mitsubishi. I was watching The Abyss ( which the box clams is enhanced for Wide Screen TVs ) so, I spent several minutes switching the resolution and turning off the scaler in my receiver.

Sure enough it is indeed that damn button that got me all worried. I brought my player over to my friends house and had the same problem as last night and noticed the V.Source button and sure enough a hit of the button and we had picture. I use HDMI and he only has DVI/Component and all was fine after that.

So thanks everyone for your help
