All you Panny Blu30 folk. How is it setup

So I have mine connected to my DLP 720P and wanted to know what everyone has done with regards to the player settings?

Enhanced video is on or off? That kind of thing.

You mean the black level setting? On will give you 0 IRE, off will give you 7.5 IRE. 7.5 IRE was the old NTSC standard, but for HDTV/BD I'd set it to 0 IRE.

So, are we talking about the Panny BD30 Blu-ray player? (Too many product names to keep straight; if we're talking about different things, I'll delete this post). If so, I've simply left all "enhancements" off (i.e., at the factory default). I played with some of them, but found in the end that the unmanipulated source was best, and as always making basic, calibration-level adjustments at the display level is preferred. That said, I have a 1080p display; maybe at 720p some of these enhancements might produce more desirable results.

What's this about the black level and IRE? I thought that the black level adjustment on the BD30 was only for non-HDMI output.

It should be, thats how it works on most HDM players.

That was/is my understanding. That it was brought up as a setup option here was all that led me to raise the question. One of my very few misgivings about the BD30 is that some of its setup options and how they're positioned in its many menus are less than clear; just wanted to be sure that I didn't miss something. That said, its performance out of the box (changing only the audio output options from PCM to bitstream) is outstanding.

I have gotten best results from the Panasonic setting the audio to bitstream as you mentioned, turning off subaudio, and setting video to 1080i - then having the Reon video processor in my Integra DTC-9.8 do the deinterlacing to 1080p. Remember DVDs are 480i and quite a few BDs are 1080i, so you'd lose quality using the Panasonic's deinterlacer instead of the Reon. Final results are stunning A/V quality!

No Reon for me (I "only" have the Onkyo TX-SR805; that Integra is a VERY sexy beast!), though 1) the majority of my BD library is/will be 1080p (and no problems with the couple 1080is) and 2) from all reviews the BD30's deinterlacing at 1080 is pretty highly-regarded (SD upscaling etc. being a separate issue). I'm more than happy. Planet Earth on BD gave me eye boners. (NB: I only said that because my wife, after I exclaimed "this is giving me eye-boners!", said "I hope you never say that again." You're welcome, sweetie!).

Anyway, I'm still keeping my Sony 77H 1080p upcon SDDVD player for SD material, but less because the BD30 performs poorly than to preserve its mechanical integrity (the less lens-switching the better, in my poorly-informed but over-reasoned opinion).
