Blu-ray Menu Navigation

Can those who own the PS3, Samsung, Panasonic or any blu-ray player tell me if they can skip straight to a BD's main menu with their menu button?

The Sharp I just bought has a "Top Menu" button, but it doesn’t seem to do anything. I have to hit "next" to skip through the trailers and pre-menu content.

The PS3 w/ the BD remote can call up the pop-up menu with the "POP UP/MENU" or "VIEW" (or square) buttons or the main menu (if present) via "TOP MENU". Also the "OPTIONS" (or triangle) button calls up a graphics overlay generated by the PS3 that pretty much has all the button options found on the remote.

OPTIONS menu (with DISPLAY info on):

During the film or when the trailers and crap are playing?

With most BDs it seems the PS3 can skip passed them, or fast forward through them at ridiculous speeds.

What I'm trying to figure out is whether or not they can be bypassed completely by hitting "menu," like with DVD.

I want to know if this is an issue with my player or if this is just a blu-ray thing.

I think it might depend on the disc, studios can set whether or not that stuff can be skipped, but it seems the PS3 can usually bypass that stuff.

Is it happening on every BD?

Yeah, I've not found one yet where the menu button does anything.

It is an option...but as Sehnzeleid said, it is disc dependent...most discs that I've come across will allow it though.

I guess I need to give Sharp a call.

I've noticed the same thing. I never gave it a thought that it might be the players fault since I've experienced the same thing on SD DVDs with multiple players. I always thought it was the way that the disc was encoded. I still do for the most part, but am interested in what you hear from Sharp if you call them.

I have found the "top menu" button on my PS3 skips pretty much everything on startup... a couple times it did not though.

Indeed, everytime I've pressed that button the disc goes to the main menu. Very helpful for all them Disney trailers & warnings.

As did I and I am also interested in what you hear. I believe I always fast forward with my PS3 through that stuff just like I do for SD-DVDs.
