Your J6P friends...what are 'they' saying now?

Just curious about the folks outside forums like this and the resulting "demise" of HD DVD. Have you heard anyone at work or neighbors or friends discuss the BR win?

What are their thoughts or comments?

I haven't heard squat. Is everyone oblivious to this?

My J6P friends don’t care what color the cases are as long as I keep having them over for films. And, of course, some cannot tell the difference between SD and HD.

"Dude, you're shit always looks good. What's the difference?"

My JSP'ers only say they have no intention of replacing any of their DVD investment into a new format. They are satisfied...

...I am not.

Amazing to me. They don't see a difference? Wow. Them be some strong Martini's you be serving son.

I think it takes far too long for new tech to be noticed. I just walked out on the deck, in the rain/sleet, had a smoke and noticed thru the neighbors window the Cartoon network squished like a Helga thigh on a grape for head wannabe.

Wow...HD is dead. Fucking A.

Most J6P friends don't even have HDTVs yet. They will pretty much wait until the deadline to get a new TV, or they will get those converters. They aren't even close to getting Blu Ray.

None I know have said anything about it. Most don't really care yet. I did have one co-worker who has a ps3 mention he was thinking of starting to buy blu-ray discs instead of dvds for the future. But that's about it.

My girlfriend doesn't know anything about either and couldn't care less... she owns like 7 DVDs.

My best friend knows about them both but doesn't care, he doesn't even own an HDTV... he's very much a "whatever is on the tv works for me" kind of guy. He'll buy fullscreen if it's all the store has in other words.

Most of my more casual friends and school buddies know about BD because of the PS3, but I've never really talked in depth about it with them. I think a few own a PS3 and buy BDs, but I don't know numbers.

Screw J6P, I am staying out until the following happens: Faster load times, sub $200 player, no lockups, audio drop outs. Oh yeah all studio support. After reading hours of thread on here and AVS HDM is not ready for primetime. My Receiver does not have HDMI or Boost LFE 10dbs via analog. Maybe this time next year I will by a new Receiver and buy a player. Until them I can watch HDM on my directv dvr via HBO, Starz, Etc. Oh yeah I also can throw in a DVD and get the same joy of the MOVIE with out worrying about the things I stated earlier.

My friends and co-workers still don't care, though the one that bought an HD DVD player doesn't really care about the shift. He says the player was a good price and he still has a large catalog to choose from since he only has about 4 or 5 HD DVDs anyway. He says BD players are still too costly and he couldn't care less about the PS3 unless it gets Halo exclusively in the future.

Most people I know just got there component cables hooked up so they actually get 480p, and that's if they have the set to do it.

They think why buy a $80 cable with three plugs when the yellow one does the same thing. In there minds 720 or 1080 ranks right up there with ray guns and teleporters.

HD just doesn't have enough benefits to convince J6P to part with his hard earned cash. I hope I'm wrong and someone can shove this in my face two years form now when SD is dead. I really really want to be wrong.

Yeh and that is the unfortunate part of HD DVD's demise. The Combo/Twindisc formats would allow J6P to keep his DVD player while also giving HD enthusiasts the movie in its full 1080p glory - all on the same disc. HD would be embraced much quicker.

Now it is going to be a long, slow adoption process that could take many years to catch on, if ever.

Hahaha! Yeah, it amazes me that there's still so much technophobia out there, considering how many other facets of our lives (banking, taxes, etc) are pushing forward as well...

Generally, my friends are now looking for ways to purchase Blu-ray players. My dad purchased the Panasonic BD-30. So things are moving a little more in my realm.

I have very few friends with HDTV's and I am the only one with an HD Source and that's HD Cable. They did notice a difference during the Superbowl. But they have no idea about the other formats. They were like HD what Blu what.

Iggy it's funny that you posted this topic because my dad's new LCD tv crapped out after 1 week and he got his money back and bought a 32 inch Sony Bravia LCD and it talked about how to hook up a Blu Ray player and he was like "What's a Blu Ray Player?" I told him don't worry about it because his Surround Sound System couldn't handle the new audio formats.

I had to instruct 3 out of the 4 of my co-workers who own an HDTV on how to get HD, each of them used composite at first, including my boss who has a 42" AQUOS.

Now that is sad.

I bet people just can't wait for the future... SD download services ONLY.

At that same time, everybody will also only listen to re-mastered 7.1 tracks in 192k Mono.

Uhhhhhh

Same here. Except I'm not buying a new receiver. I can only have things so loud here in my apartment so I really don't see the point of lossless audio and shit like that. A good 5.1 track set at about 45db works for me. I can't believe how indifferent I am to the whole next gen DVD thing, but I am. I have even surprised myself.

I guess you would call me a fringe enthusiast. I own around 200 DVD's and watch around 3-5 per week. I recently bought a 50" Samsung 1080p DLP that I saved a yr. for. I absolutely love this TV. I guess I should get a BR player that can feed the 1080p capabilities of my set, but fuck it. My DVD's look and sound great, at least to me. I am sure I'll eventually be on board when the format war is truly over and prices start dropping, but the sense of urgency on my behalf is virtually non existent...still.

So yeah, it's not only J6P who needs to be convinced.
