Xbox 360 HD DVD sales spike 71,900% at Amazon

Sales for Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 HD DVD Player spiked 71,900 percent Amazon.com following a price cut to $79.99 on Wed.

On Wed. evening, the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player ranked as the No. 1-selling product in the Video Games division as the discounted peripheral went in and out of stock.

The $79.99 is the lowest price available for the peripheral, which was discounted by Microsoft to $129.99 the same day.

The Xbox 360 HD DVD Player previously sold for $179.99 and $199.99.

Amazon this week is promoting steep discounts on HD DVD products.

It slashed 50 percent off more than 100 HD DVD titles on Sun.

It also price cut the HD-A3 HD DVD Player to a new low of $121.00

Additionally, Amazon held discounts on Sony Corp.'s Blu-ray disc format as low as $14.99 and up to 53 percent off select titles.

Toshiba last month price cut all stand alone HD DVD Players following an announcement from Warner Bros. that it will produce high-definition content exclusively on Blu-ray.

Retailer Circuit City told Punch Jump in Jan. that it experienced strong HD DVD sales and will continue to sell HD DVD product at retail.

U.K. based retailer Woolworths in Jan. said that it will cease to offer HD DVD titles in favor of Blu-ray disc titles.

Blu-ray player sales recorded an 82 percent share in the week ending Jan. 27. HD DVD recorded the remaining 18 percent, according to data from Nielsen VideoScan.

This really isnt a surprise. It does mean people will be buying up more left over HD-DVD inventory. I hope that still means software will go down though. I am ready to buy more HD-DVD once they hit clearance prices.

HD DVD drive $119.99, movies up to 50% off

As if the HD DVD news couldn't get happier today! After Microsoft slashed the price of the HD DVD add-on for the Xbox 360 only days ago, Amazon has undercut the MSRP by a cool $10, offering the player for $119.99. The savings don't end there mind you as a slew of HD DVDs have been discounted to up to 50% off the regular retail price. Is this another sign that the high-def format war is winding to a close and Amazon is letting go of its inventory or are they trying to make room for that Blu-Ray add-on that we've heard Microsoft talk about?

It's over. Hd-dvd should have done this last year when increased sales from bogos and cheap hardware would have made a difference. Without the necessary studio, retail, and rental support, hd-dvd is dead format walking right now.

Looking at the current state of BD vs HD it's quite easy to see the writing on the wall. If you want to cling on to the miniscule chance for a comeback for HD that's your perogative but I wouldn't discount other people's opinions that are based on where it clearly looks like things are headed in the hi-def realm.

With Netflix discontinuing its support of HD DVD, it's clearly a sign that things are over for the doomed format.

yeah WB is the biggest movie company in my mind. When they went BLU HD-DVD went to hell. Can't wait to see some classic toons like Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, and all the other WB greats in BLU HD, This coming from someone who has no source of HD content other then the few tv shows I download on the net.

The HD-DVD for The Adventures of Robin Hood has Rabbit Hood and Robin Hood Daffy both in HD. I'm sure when they get around to releasing it on blu-ray it will as well. They look pretty good, but keep in mind that these are fairly old cartoons so grain and a few belmishes are present. Anyone expecting them to look like modern cartoons like the Simpsons Movie is going to be disappoined.
