Samsung sued over BD-P1200, likely due to BD+

http://blog.wired.com/business/2008/...g-sued-ov.html

I wonder what the settlement will be?

What was the settlement when they were sued for all those crap DVD players they made 10 years ago? I'm sure it'll be about the same.

A lot of companies were sued for DVD players.

In fact, Panasonic (arguably the leading BD standalone manufacturer) & JVC were included for the failing A105/A110/A310/A120 DVD lasers. I know because I had it

Interestingly enough, this Samsung BD-P1200 lawsuit appears to be over titles that did not play properly due to BD+ protection and Samsung's failure to get BD+ working stable in a timely manner - as opposed to an actual hardware issue.

Just so we're clear. This isn't a BD+ or Blu-Ray issue. It's a Samsung issue. I sense yet another Blu-Ray bashing thread...

It shouldn't be. I am a bit to tired to read the article but if its a Samsung thing then thats that.

Why exactly does everything have to be either positive Blu-ray news or Blu-ray bashing?

Great. The blu ray player for 8,000 points at Disney Movie Rewards is "supposed to be the 1400 according to an email I received from Disney" BUT someone at ultimatedisney cashed in his points last week & got a 1200 shipped to him. I've still got 625 points to go before I hit 8,000 which should take about 6-8 weeks but if I read of more people getting the 1200 I might keep going for 11,000 points to get the Samsung 23" LCD hdtv & buy my own blu ray player when I feel like it (& a decent one with an extended warranty). Luckily the DMR program has been extended to the end of January '09. It was supposed to end mid '08.

To be honest I think the only BD standalone worth its salt is the Panasonic DMP-BD50, which will be available in 1-3 months for ~$499. It is based on the BD30 except it has the full profile 2.0 compliance (final BD spec), can decode all nextgen codecs, and it likely will also have the BD30's LFE bug fixed from what i've heard. So, assuming all goes well, I'd buy the Panasonic BD50 and use your Disney points for something else. Samsung seems to be having problems with their BD players.

Well, if you look at the lawsuit it seems to be primarily based on discs with BD+ authoring. Strictly a software issue. The first Samsung player was wrongly maligned for having a "faulty DNR chip" when in reality it was simply the first couple waves of Blu-ray software that looked like shit, not the player.

Aside from BD+ issues, the only Samsung player I've heard problems with is the BD-P1400. That one appears to be a real lemon.

This is ridiculous in my opinion. I guess I should have sued Toshiba beck in '98 for putting out the crap 3109 player for like 700 dollars.
