major tv question please help
ok, my wife and i bought a 46 samsung for the bedroom that is 120 hz and 25000 to 1 contrast ratio. My question is what is the contrast ration about and how important is the 120hz. We are thinking of returning and exchanging for a smaller model for the bedroom that has a lower contrast ratio and hz.

Without knowing which model number it is I can't give you a specific opinion on if it's a good display or not. But I have two Samsung displays, one 61" DLP in the living room and one smaller LCD in my bedroom. I've been very happy with both of them. So unless you've noticed some problem with it, I'd keep it. The 25000 to 1 contrast ratio is in theory the ratio of the black to white area. The higher the number the better, so don't echange it for something lower. But manufacturers tend to fudge the numbers a bit and the conditions they arrive at them, so they aren't quite as meaningful. The 120hz in theory helps reduce motion blur and judder. I haven't seen 120hz in practice, but again, in theory the higher the hz the better. As I said before, unless you notice something wrong or don't like the picture, I wouldn't exchange it. It sounds like you have a pretty good display. Of course if space is an issue and you need the smaller one for that reason it's understandable. 46" is awful big for a bedroom (insert your own sexual innuendo joke here).

72Hz is also a common frequency (generally used by plasma TVs), as they do not suffer from refresh issues, and wouldn't need the higher frequency to compensate for it. The higher frequency purportedly reduces motion blur/refresh on LCDs, but it's not a cure-all. Motion blur is still very evident in high contrast images. Also, most "120 Hz" TVs don't actually use that frequency for the 24p correction, but for motion blur correction only. I'm sure there's a website out there that lists the specific capabilities of your TV sets (such as the contrast ratio, which is most certainly not 25,000:1).

The "25000:1" contrast ratio and ones like this manufacturers claim are inflated numbers based on artificial pumping of the colors via techniques such as dynamic iris. While that contrast ratio can be achieved, it is not achieved naturally; the whites are run extremely hot and colors blown out to make up for weaker black response, and as a result when using dynamic iris scenes can look overly pumped/contrasty/artificial. With dynamic iris disabled, or in other words the true performance of the set, you are looking at something more like 2000:1.
As videoworx stated, some manufacturers state the true contrast ratio of the set in addition to the "pumped"/"processed" ratio, but Samsung is not one of these manufacturers. Which is a shame, because their "pumped" specification essentially means nothing.
