Xbox 360 HDDVD Drive $50

According to one of Ars Technica's insider moles, Microsoft will be either announcing or secretly informing retail stores that the Xbox 360 HD DVD player's new retail price is (drum roll) $50. Yup, $50. A drop of $80 from the recently announced price drop to $129. Ars Technica says that the new $50 price tag was to be revealed yesterday the 21st, but so far we haven't heard anything from Microsoft regarding any price cut. We also searched a few major online retailers for a magic $50 price tag, but were unsuccessful. We'll just have to wait and see what becomes of the 360's HD DVD player as we expect its price to drop significantly as it dies a slow, tortuous death. The same death that the entire HD DVD format has been experiencing. But on the brighter side of things, we hear the 360's HD DVD player makes a fantastic door stop, so be sure to keep that in mind.

Actually if the 360 could do 1080p24, I'd consider using it to relieve the XA2 of it's HD DVD duties, so as to last longer.

I might consider it for my laptop, which has a blu-ray drive in it. That way I could watch hd-dvds on it as well if I am traveling.

Why would you want to doom them to a brief life of HD frustration?

I don't see it like that at all. My one friend has the 360 and won't be getting into HD on his own anytime soon. He's simply got too many bills and can't afford it. So for $50 bucks he gets to see what HD is all about via his PJ. Cheap for me and cheaper yet for him! All he has to do is buy (or also receive as gifts) a couple of movies which are now plummeting in price.

Another friend is in a similar situation so for me this $50 is a great price while introducing them to what HD has to offer. Granted, they probably could wait another year or two for the players and s/w to come down in price and buy on their own, but getting a taste early is cool in my eyes.

I would like to think they feel the opposite of being 'doomed' and instead feel good that their buddy got them into HD on the super cheap.

But don't worry dear, I'll scratch your name from my gift list.

First time caller, long time listener...

I think we're going to see an influx in HD DVD sales because of the price drop.
They're going to be around for a long while... long after that last disc is pressed.

I'm going to stock up on players so I can have Extras I picked up an HD-A35, and will be looking for a backup next payday. Then I'll pick up a few HD-A30s and keep it all in the closet...for that day that one breaks, and can't be fixed.

As a result of recent decisions made by Toshiba, Hollywood studios, and retailers, Microsoft plans to withdraw from HD DVD. Xbox will no longer manufacture new HD DVD players for the Xbox 360, but we will continue to provide standard product and warranty support for all Xbox 360 HD DVD Players in the market. As we stated earlier, we do not believe this decision will have any material impact on the Xbox 360 platform or our position in the marketplace. HD DVD is one of the several ways we offer a high definition experience to consumers and we will continue to give consumers the choice to enjoy digital distribution of high definition movies and TV shows directly to their living room, along with playback of the DVD movies they already own.

Back-up for my Toshiba HD-XA2

I'm buying XBOX 360 Pro when Ninja Gaiden II comes out so I went ahead and picked one up today @ Best Buy.

I already have Kong & Harmony 360 and can't bother waiting for the Rebate so I'm selling the King Kong HD DVD, Remote & UPC Rebate for $30.

Not bad, $20 for HD DVD Add-on.

He could also go online and download 720p movie rentals with his 360. No add-on is needed, and it won't cost him more than a few bucks a movie.

It costs $10 for the 5 HD-DVDs in Canada.
I don't know if it's worth the risk, lots of people don't seem to be getting them.

Well, I phoned the hotline for the free HD-DVDs, they had a statement saying that even with the recently announcement, all eligible orders will be fulfilled, 10-12 weeks turn around. Thankfully, and by chance, I bought the 360 add-on on the last day for the offer.
