I want BD to succeed, but I want it on my terms.

- I want higher audio & video quality - (Done)
- I want less DRM (nope)
- I want the same or more portability (nope)
- I want media as affordable as DVD (nope)
- I want a stable feature set (nope)

I could live without some of those, but 1/5 is tough to swallow.

I guess Sony will also pull the plug on the PS3 for kicks, scrap all their investment with BD & give away their partial ownership of MGM to AVS members for free.

The problem with people who run around spouting silly nonsense like the guy in that link, is that they somehow assume that it's one or the other with a content provider. Which just isn't true. If you're a smart content owner you release in as many formats as are realistically available to you that will make you a profit. They don't have to dump blu-ray to do downloads, you do both and clean up all around! At least if you have any business sense you still do. Hell, it wasn't until 2006 that the last major studio finally stopped releasing VHS tapes, and that format had been all but dead for five years at least. You really think companies are going to just stop doing blu-ray and walk away when there's still money left to be made. Nope.
It's pretty clear from reading though the link and where the source came from, that either a). the guy who posted is completely making it up just to stir up fud, or more likely b). his source is a manufacturer's rep who stated they were making a product that caters to downloaders and thus has a vested interest in spreading doubt about the future of blu-ray.
As Derb pointed out, they spent a lot of money on the format, and while it's not anywhere near dvd sales yet, it is making money. To walk away from a product that's a modest success is silly, especially when they're finally reaching the point where they actually will start making money back on their investment. Hell, Sony is still pushing the PSP, both in hardware and software, and that's a far smaller base than blu-ray is at this point.

I'm sure the guy isn't lying though. The salesman for the product was probably just trying to push his wares.

It was funny. Especially the responses to his rumor. I like the one where they asked him if the rep told him this telepathicly.

I think BD is in it for the long haul. There is no way they're going to have sunk that much into a field only to turn tail and run. Further, I like to own the physical copy of my media. Unless downloads are truly portable, I'll avoid them just as I have the Xbox Live downloads.
